Or are you talking about the weird darkening that's supposed to look like blood splashing on your character?

Check your character status, you have probably accumulated hollowing.

Apparently if you roll around in water/dirt you get dirty, when you slash mobs blood also gets on your face....my joker eventually looked like he had a ninja headband.

did you talk to yoel about "teasing out your true power"...the trade off is you are hollowing if you accept his power boost.

Your "leveling up greed" brought hollowness on you. For each death you'll get even more hollow. To cure it you must use a purifying stone.

A certain NPC will occasionally give you free levels, which will also give you a dark sigil. This causes you too look more zombie-like each time you die, but is purely cosmetic other than giving you access to a certain sidequest.

It just makes you ugly, people will now know that you died a lot despite being "powrefull"

if you leveled up with the spell merchant it means your hollowing. DO NOT worry it's purely asthetic and has no bearing on your gameplay. it can be temporarily reversed with a purging stone and permanently cured by securing a fire keepers soul.

If you have blood on, greyish streaks can cover your face very often.
