how bad did i just mess up
I accedently burned an undead bone shard at the main fireling bonfire. I assume its like a bonfire ascetic? how much did i just screw myself. im only level 24....

It is not like a ascetic it is like Sublime bone dust

undead bone shards actually level up your estus flask so i guess you're fine ;)

I saw the option to do this but haven't I am curious as to what happens when you burn the undead bone shard at a Bonfire.

It just strengthens your estus flask.

I'm at +9 now on my estus, and the enemies are the same as before, as far as I can tell. I don't know why it says bonfire level up right, but I haven't notice it change the game, besides making estus stronger.

It's the equivalent of DS2's sublime bone dust, it just makes it so your flask is more refills more. It's not a bonfire ascetic.

Does that only apply when in an area near that bonfire that you burned it at?

You can only burn them at the firelink shrine. The effect is global.

There's nothing like a bonfire asetic in DS3.

Because by throwing this bones in the fire u strength the fire and not the estus directly so the bone fire levels up.
