Grieve wounds during the fight, I can assume.

i'd guess a form of sucide. He'd achomplished his purpose and didn't want to go hollow.

Who says he died?

Was probably his time. You can only imagine how much he had been through, and he was on his last legs, putting the last of his strength into his fight with Yhorm. ggwp Siegward. See you in the next life.
A fitting end for a true legend of the series.
May he and the rest of the legendary NPCs truly rest in peace, and may From create new, gripping characters in the games to come.

Well...According to the lore, Siegward made a promise to a best friend (Yhorm the Giant)...I don't know what he promised to him, but after seeing the fight, i think the promise involves killing him, the reason behind it is not explained in the game...That 'toast' you see is the toast of Siegward fullfilling his promise to Yhorm...That Storm Ruler he used is one of Yhorm's...He gave it to him, to fullfill the promise.

When plebs lose purpose they go hollow

Siegward fulfilled his duty and had nothing left therfore was bound to go hollow.

He rekt himself to prevent the hollowing.

From the way he talks during the questline,, I think he is just an old Knight at the end of his time. He just wants to die as a warrior.

if yhorm isnt the 3rd cinder lord u kill, u can actually see his last moment with ur own eyes as u walk out.

But you dont see a body on the floor. You just see his items. So either he left his armor or died.

seeing how all 'humans' fade to ash when they die, it can be assumed that Siegward is indeed dead... and for good at that.

Sirris turn to ash then?

And Eygon and Orbeck.

But I think Siegward really died... because if you let him die in the battle, the same thing will happen.

Uh...no. Not even sure where you got that. Humans don't just turn to ash.

He is, in fact, alive and returning to Catarina, and you can't prove otherwise.

It was never directly shown, but his armor and weapon can be found in Yhorm's arena after the fight was finished, implying that he died there since he would not have stripped himself of his equipment and run off naked for no reason.
Also it's just a dark souls tradition that friendly characters die at the end of their quest line.
