Like all gimmick fights, once you know the trick, it simply becomes a thematic boss, not an actual challenge.
Try keeping further away from him. It should prompt him to start doing some of his other attacks.
As you damage him, the skeletons he summons will get stronger (he'll spawn in more advanced varieties). But he usually ends up killing them with his cloud attack, so it's still not that big a deal.
You probably haven't noticed the sword cause it spawns in his right hand and from what I understand the meta is to destroy the right bracelet first. Then focusing on the left hand, chances are you won't notice the sword
The skeletons and the sword are two seperate things, independant of each other, and can happen at any time. It's RNG, and may or may not happen. I've seen him draw out the sword first thing once. Other times I've never seen him do either attack. YMMV. His sword CAN be threatening, especially since he does a giant WotG when he decides to put the sword away again, but its mostly his breath attack and accidentally getting too close to him that will kill you, as that gas kills you FAST. Easy to dodge when you know about it, and hell, his breath attack doesn't even touch his bracelets so you can just wail on him while he does it, but there you go.
Otherwise, nothing new about having a boss that's easier than the tutorial boss. DS1 had Pinwheel, DS2 didn't really have a tutorial boss but I'll count Last Giant as it, so... DS2 had Prowling Magus.
Fun facts about Wolnir
1. He has a unique death if you kill him without breaking all 3 bracelets (breaking 2 is fine).
2. ALL of the skeletons he summons have white eyes (will revive after dieing), which is the only thing that makes them threatening.
3. I'm not sure if its his health, how many bracelets he has remaining, or just how many times he's summoned skeletons, but later skeleton summons can bring in multiple CARTHUS SKELETONS of all varieties, including those damn annoying Shotel ones that jump around flinging daggers. And they ALL have white eyes, too! Good grief, it was hard killing Wolnir without breaking his 3rd bracelet purely because of these things!
Thanks for the info on the sword though. As well as all the other info, now I'm gonna try to kill him without breaking all the bracelets. Wish me luck.
