Also, for the eyes, think sharks. Tiny and just behind and above the mouth.
They have been "less scary" since DS2 anyways. The scary part wasn't the instant death. It was the painful status effect in DS1 (which used to be worse at launch).
and yes, the curses are SUPER annoying, mostly in ds1, but their design is personally terrifying, please dont decide for me why something was less scary to me unless i ask purposefuly ask you to
