If the " Hornet Ring " isn't Overpowered....?
Why did the developers go out of the way to hide the ring until you've defeated the Abyss Watchers? Obviously they felt it was too powerful for someone to obtain early, for those that were witty enough to do so.

Was playing on a new character that had ventured past the Dancer and into the Untended Graves instead of defeating Vordt, and noticed that the Hornet Ring doesn't spawn in its location. A wiki-search shows that Abyss Watchers are required before it will show.

Just thought it was a bit odd to do so, on an item many consider over-kill, myself included.

- EDIT - Please keep in mind I'm not ranting, just a nudging at the idea of the ring having a requirement and poking fun of its disliked feature. :P

It's there cause it fits nicely since you can also get Artorias' armor there and it's at a grave with the Abysswalker sword. Same as you get some miracle rings in late game, it just fits in better lore-wise.

EDIT: That being said I agree that there should be something done about the OHK critical damage, not necesairly nerfing the ring but adjusting the crit modifier on certain weapons for instance.

to get ornstein armor, you have to kill the nameless king, no? that armor is hardly OP. looks pretty dope though...

also, i don't know why people like artorias armor so much. hate the leggings.

I dont think that's an argument. You can just coop and make every boss easy, so saying that the hornet ring makes abyss watchers easy is a...

You can also use it on Pontiff, for example, that doesnt make the battle easier... you still have to land a lot of parries, and he is unpredictable as hell, at least until you learn those weird combos, if they can be learned.

It boosts damage at 30% so, early game, your damage is low, so the buff is also low. If a riposte is like 3 free hits, a hornet ring make it 4 free hits. 1 extra hit. No matter if low level or high level, one hit will always be balanced (low level: low damage but enemy low hp, high level: high damage but enemy high hp) so i dont see its an issue

For the love of god, THIS. Big weapons should be penalized by using the hornet ring... and small ones, buffed

Then wear another ones that fits the armor :D Artorias rocks, that helmet, the lore with sif, the epic style he fights in DS1, the sword moves...

It's probably hidden after Abyss Watchers because you can backstab the Abyss Watchers and they wanted the first fight to be somewhat challenging.

If you can do Dancer, Oceiros and Gundyr at low level before Abyss watchers, i doubt the fight will be challenging... and if you did coop through the 3 bosses to get the ring, you can just coop again at abyss watchers. I dont see challenge as an argument, just lore-wise

Yeah because it's so useful for pve and nobody whines about it in pvp where such things don't matter.

I would say that the rings power level has nothing to do with the difficulty in acquiring it. So many of the hardest to get weapons in the game are pretty useless while many of the items you can get it the first area are part of the pvp meta and OP pve.

The hornet ring is a bit unbalanced with big weapons, but your argument skills need a buff.

That's my point. How good an item is rarely has much to do with how or where you find it.

try hornet ring with a DAGGER for riposte. youll be suprised. we already had this oneshot ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on dks2 for ahwile with mundane daggers.

if they dont wanna nerf the ring riposte dmg needs to be reduced by atleast 30%(40 for daggers) globally so oneshots are gone.

only other choice is to destroy the ring. aka nerf to 10%. nobody would use it anymore then probaly as 10% dont justfy a ringslot anymore.

a riposte taking 60-70% of your hp? totally fine with me if i make a mistake and get parried or if lag was in play. you can still recover from that mistake if you had full life when it happend.

but taking you from 100% or even 90% straight to zero? thats ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. its the main reason so many people do nothing but parry fish all day.

beeing unpredictable makes it very hard to parry you. but it will still happen from time to time. sometimes its lag or the opponent is just guessing right at the right time. but that shouldnt lead to a oneshot.

at low sl pvp its actually balanced as there are no oneshots with hornet actually even if you get it early. but ripostes doent scale very well with weapon upgrades and the reduced health of invaders/phantoms. from hasnt tought this trough fully. a nerf is needed.

My guess is that they want one shots to exist to keep players from getting too comfortable in duels when their opponent is almost dead. I don't think it's a GOOD way to do that, but my guess is that is why it's in there.
