As for the magic resistances, it also works against buffed/infused weapons with elemental damage, including vs NPCs and bosses and the like as well as PvP. So vs weapons with split damage it's pretty effective at reducing how much you take. Higher physical resistances help a little, but not enough to really be worth it in my opinion when the objective is to avoid getting hit as much as possible. And unless you have enough vigor to work in tandum with resitances to allow you to survive another hit, it's really not going to help (eg if you have 1000 hp, and a guy hits you for 700 damage without physical resistances and 500 with physical resistances, you will still die in two hits either way).
That's about it. Might as well just go fashion.
Damage Reduction is the same on all equipment.
Damage Absorption's effect softcaps at 20%.
Poise does nothing.
