I'm not positive, but I think the key is in front of the Grand Archives door once you beat Aldrich. Either her or some other boss.

That's why it's locked. I believe you have to kill the other lords of cinder before you can go into the archives.

Might be why, Gotthard is the one with the key to the archives, you loot it from his corpse right in front of the doors when you get there along with his twinswords, he probably didn't make it there yet.
The story does call for the prince to go last too, so back to hunting Aldrich and Yhorm.

Oh well rip rest of this playthrough because i'm leaving the entire area after pontiff and anor londo open for invasions for guerrilla warfare! if anyone is interested please add me <3

The key to the archives spawns right in front of the door after you kill the other 3 lords of cinder.
