Everyone has a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up quest line.
Everyone goes hollow or die.
Dark Souls' world just sucks.
It's lazy in a way, but evocative of the main theme as well, reinforcing the point of a fading world with people hollowing, usually over some obsessions. It's a bit different in DS3, especially with Anri's quest line. But there are no happy endings for anyone... Except maybe Yuria if you do the usurpation of fire ending....
I'm just saying there's a chance that there is something more you can do.. Though it doesn't seem likely.
It's a feature of the Lore.
Every NPC has a quest that allows them to either pass into the afterlife [i.e. THEY DIE] or they fail and go Hollow.
Dying in Dark Souls is a good thing.
Again:
Why does she return to smouldering lake after she had already been there and found "no sign of Horace"?
If she found no sign of Horace, where does his gear come from when he builds his cairn?
Why do you need to collect her sword first in order to make her go hollow and appear in the lake?
No, just like I pointed out earlier. It isn't a rule that NPC's just die or go hollow. You're choosing the simple answer.
I guess we'll just attribute this to one of the hundreds of other oversights in this game.
Ever occured to you that she might be lying? If you don't kill Horace and tell her where he is, you'll find her dead at his feet, so clearly she does check out that section of Smouldering Lake. If you killed Horace, it's quite possible that she finds his corpse and goes into shock, going into denial about the whole thing until Aldrich is killed, at which point she makes peace with the fact that he's dead, and goes back to pay her respects to him.
