In PvE you can wield whatever you want.
For example, the Zweihander has it okay because it's long enough for it's big vertical art to reach stuff.
The Exectioner's Greatsword meanwhile, does one of the 360 spin it across your back Stomp arts... But it can barely hit even PvE enemies without being interrupted or outright missing due to it's length.
I'm not exactly "Great" at PvP, but the Stance Arts on my Flamberge (I'm not running a bleed build, and even if I was the flamberge is still swinging at greatsword speeds) are often enough to turn things around.
Hell, it's not a greatsword, but I've used the Stance Art to guard break players using the BROKEN SWORD, because the broken sword still has a stance art.
They do suffer in the "Min maxed efficiency" front in PvP, to be fair. Because they aren't fast enough to sneak multiple hits in, and aren't huge enough to get hyper frames/make kamikaze trade hit exchanges appealing.
But because of that, it seems there are a lot of people who by all rights should have killed me, that I still managed to beat at the last second, just because of that lack of familiarity/assumption Normal Greatswords "Are bad meta"
It is light,it is fast,it doesn't consume stamina,it has the WA of a long sword,it has thurst poke... there are no downsides on this weapon, none.
I rly want to use them, but in the end I just switch to Red Hilted Halberd and L2 R1R1 through everything. I've seen Black Knight's Sword has perseverance as weapon art 2, does anyone know if that weapon is good (in terms of dmg for a quality)?
problem is great swords are in a really bad position in general.
at 40/40 most people reach about 500ish ar with a GS , where as a ultra sword or bkga will be 750+
but straight swords such as dark sword or anri sword have been hitting 450+ AR
so basically with a greatsword, you get the slow attacks of a larger weapon, but you don't get hyper armor, you also get the increased stam cost, but barely do anymore damage than a regular sword.
