Halberd viable?
doing a quality build and my main weapon is longsword, but figured I want a backup with some reach, and I tend to go for the realistic looking weapons, so halberd or red-handled halberd seem like decent choices. How viable are they, which is the better and is there something else in that area thats even better?

Halberds are viable for PvP, and PvE which the community doesn't mention much. In regards to which one you want to use they are just different flavors though I prefer the red-handled halberd.

Yee. They aren't too hot for damage, but the range is sweet and some have a sweep attack on R2 when 1H that I like a lot on PVP when there are multiple enemies. I prefer Glaives, but theyr'e fine, make halberds great again

Red hilted is nice for the perseverance buff. However I think the Black Knight glaive is better damage wise and has a terrific weapon art.

I like going with my halberd, very similar build. It has good reach, works well as a R1 poke weapon in tight corridors, plus a nice big sweep attack for swarms of rats and such. Mine has been easily viable in PvE well into NG+ and beyond. Infused with refined gem and buffed with lightning, I believe it kills red-eye Lotheric Knight near Lotheric Castle bonfire in NG+ in about 6 R1 hits. It stun locks him too so you can just mash until he goes down. Fun! I went with the vanilla halberd over the red handle, I think becuase I like the skill better (but I think red handle does a little better damage? not sure about this).

Ok good tips, btw I'm only interested in PvE for now. Always forget to mention that.

They're viable in everything. They have fast attacks and sweeping attacks, so staggering enemies and fighting multiple enemies is no problem. They also have hyper armor so you don't get staggered too much yourself.

i always think either gundyr's halberd or Black Knight Glaive which you can obtain both in untended graveyard, and their reach is amazing you can poke bosses and roll to safety without worry most of the time

THe best halberd IMO early game is either the Lucerne or if you can get him to drop it, the Winged Knight Halberd.

The red hilted halberd is available at the undead settlement, and is basically the best weapon in the game due to its overwhelming damage mitigation, counter damage, range, and moveset. Its requirements are 14/14 so it's not hard to build for at all.

Anything is viable used right!
