Greirat Always Dies
It seems impossible to save him from Irythille. Every single time i try either patches never shows up in any location, or despite telling patches AND saving siegward he still dies.

Iv done this 8 times in total. 3 times i just told patches, and twice i just saved siegward. Once patches never showed up in any location (i didnt do anything to trigger his vanishing), and twice i told patches where greirat went and saved siegward from the well and met him at the distant mannor.

No matter what i do Greirat never makes it past Irithylle and its really starting to irritate me. I just want to be able to buy exploding/splitting bolts :/

No, i spend a lot of times in Smoldering Lake (leveling) and at the end, Greirat was alive. Killing a boss (not Pontif) and avoiding Irythille Dungeon is all that matters.

So if the boss i kill after sending him is Pontiff then he dies? All but one time i killed Pontiff. One time i did the Demon King first but apperantly since i talked to onion bro after sending greirat out it didnt matter and he died anyways.

Just how good are Splitting Bolts anyways. I was planning to try it as a support character in heavyset pvp areas like anor londo, by using splitting and exploding bolts to deal noteable damage from afar.

Anyways im gunna make a new character just to get these, this is my planned procedure from start to finish, tell me what you all think:

Get The Key in Highwall
Save Greirat from Highwall
Give him the bone and reload 3 times
Send Him out
Do Onion Bro's first quest
NOT kill the Greatwood
Kill Crystal Sages
Do Onion Bro's 2nd quest
Ignore ♥♥♥♥♥ ass Patches (or murder him)
Advanced to Irithylle
NOT light the Distant Mannor bonfire
Make sure Onion Bro is at the fireplace, but not interact with him
Send Greirat out again
Kill Greatwood
Talk to Onion Bro

---And If this all works---
Send Greirat out again for his (SPOILER) tragic ending
This is how I do to make sure Greirat comes back alive from Irithyll
-I kill Pontiff
-I ask him to pillage
-I go straight to Anor London and defeat Aldrich
-There he is! Back at the firelink shrine

You can also kill the Old Demon King if you want to.

Just don't, at any point, enter Irithylle Dungeon. Don't. Not a single step there. The moment the game shows Irithyll Dungeon, it's over (at least if you rely on the real Onion man to save him).

Also, make sure Onion man is saved with his armor or that Patches knows of Grairat's whereabouts when he still owns the Onion's armor.

To save greirate in Irithril, just save Onion-Bro from the trapped well first.

When greirat comes back he always says "Thank god that Onion looking knight was there to fight off those enemies" or something along those lines.

I always do that (or not 3 times). He ends up dead despite me taking every action to save him. But apperantly doing very specific things within Irithylle like talking to onion bro before Greirat is saved, or killing Sullyvahn right after sending Greirat out, will get him killed. I have a plan to get it right but im just waiting for someone to give me an opinion on if itl work.

Dont wanna waste a day getting all the way to Lothric Castle on a new character just to not get it right, again

You can light the bonfire of the Distant Manor without screwing up, Siegward needs to be present at Irithyll, which means not entering the Irithyll Dungeons, which start the second you cross the door that starts the Invasion of the Dark Phantom Alva. Siegward won't advance further in his questline unless you enter the Dungeons, so talking to him is safe there.
I did it on NG++ which is my current playthrough, talked to Siegward, opened all the shortcuts up to Pontiff, went to Firelink, sent Greirat to pillage and killed Pontiff, Greirat was back, safe and sound.

Nonsense, what i usually do is, make sure that before going to irithril i saved onion bro, that means i don't set foot there(usualyl), afterwards when i advanced to the church i go back to send greirat pillaging, dum-dee-doo, i reach the waters go and light the bonfire right before the irithril dungeons, then go back outside to the water, into the sewers, kill all the spider ladies and sigh with relief that there's no dead greirat there.

Afterwards i talk to onion-bro in the kitchen and kill sullyvan.

Greirat will be saved by whoever has the Catarina armor set. If you give it to Siegward in the well, and advance him to Irithyll then Greirat will be saved by him. If you don't help Siegward, and Patches still posesses the set, then after sending Greirat out, Patches will ask where he went and go save him.

If you send Greirat out and don't send him either form of help before killing a boss, then he will die. If you send him help, then he'll be back at Firelink after you kill a boss.

if you ask patches for help, he needs to have the onion armor with him.

Just make sure you pay attention to the fact that the trigger for Greirat's survival or death after sending him out will be your next boss kill. So make sure to set things up properly beforehand.

I planned to skip the Greatwood and then kill it after i do all the aforementioned steps. Iv heard killing Sullyvahn can result in Greirat dying anyways

If this ever happened to anyone then it's because they didn't set the conditions properly first. Pontiff's death won't cause Greirat to die unless he is unprotected.

However; there is supposedly an unknown time limit of sorts, where if you wait too long after sending Greirat out he will die before killing a boss.

I cleared Irithylle in about 15min after sending Greirat out. On another character i was testing how long it took for him and after 1 hour he never showed up dead.

Even still, if 15min is too long, this questline seems to be unnessisarily tricky

Here's an absurdly good interactive checklist for a playthrough, quests and all. Toggle visibility of what categories you want it to show (questlines, rings, estus, etc). Greirat progress is in there too of course.

https://zkjellberg.github.io/dark-souls-3-cheat-sheet/

But don't use it if there's still anything you'd like to discover on your own.

TL;DR comments. I Killed the Dancer early and had Siegward save Greirat after I did a run through of Lothric castle in NG+ and when he returned I sent him to Lothric. I went and killed Pontiff after that and went back to firelink and talked to patches and he asked about Greirats location and I told him he went to Lothric Castle.

Note I sent him to Lothric before I killed Pontiff and told Patches after I killed Pontiff.

I don't know where this is going but I'm not sure if anyone else stumbled upon it yet.
