Gems are useless
Seems like these gems are useless, it's better to up weapon but not transform with gems, better to fire the weapon by the spell, so physical damage will be the same and fire damage will be as addition to it.

I have 160 level and as I see it's really bad idea to use these gems because it reduces the physical damage and makes impossible to use the spell to a weapon.

What's the point then?

You can use other gems as the elemental ones.

With an elemental infusion you don't have to rely on a buff.

Have you found Coals to allow for more infusions? There are infusions that increase a weapon's scaling after lowering its base damage a bit. I agree on the elemental ones being kinda meh if they don't have scaling, but there are some infusions that add scaling (like Crystal infusion).

But suddenly you have a full Str or dex build, now you can't use the fire/mag/light enchant what now you say.
Well those useless gems also let you go Str+ or Dex+ or quality.

Gems are far from useless, also i always slap a fire gem on a random weapon to kill slimes and stun those shadow/darkness whatever monsters.

well, welcome to dark souls i guess. n no, each of these gems has some very good use to certain weapons/builds. there are 15 different infusions(16 gems).

there are gems without any scaling like fire gem or raw gem. these are extremly good early on, for casters who dont level str/dex n for all meta pvp ( below lvl 90 / 120 ) ( you are far above any meta )

n than there are gems which improve scaling like heavy gem or sharp gem. these are awesome for lategame sincee they get better with raisin str/dex.

than we also have support gems like simple gem (adds focus regeneration) or blood gem / poison gem (which add debuffs)

so NO these gems are ultra usful.^^

Really? Make a picture and share with us. It's not a problem, isn't?

Infusing weapons has always been a bum deal. It's almost always better to just upgrade to +10 and then buff with resin or spell/miracle/pyromancy

Refined/Heavy/Sharp are usually better than uninfused though. There are some exceptions, of course.

Depends on your build. Those are more for pure Str or pure Dex. A quality build gets almost nothing from those.

Refined is a straight upgrade for my Lothric Knight GS at 45/40, for example.

Just because one specifc build doesn't benefit from them, does not mean gems are useless.

While I lost base damage from infusing my weapon I also gained damage by choosing the dex/str infusion. Lost I think 30 base damage, gained 50 scale damage, or something like that. Gotta be smart about it.
Using a fire/lightning/magic infusion means that while you might make less damage to standard enemies, to enemies with weaknesses for one of those will take more damage without having to spend souls on resins or stats for buffspells. Sure you'd make less damage in general but it's not like you don't make any damage at all.

speak for yourself mate. i can't get enough of refined gems at 40 dex/ 40 str. almost every time i infuse one with refined it gains 20-80 damage depending on current scaling bonuses / base damage

Agreed. Gems are far from useless. The mechanics behind adding gems is not to make a weapon OP but rather make a weapon have more functionality. GIT GUD

No it's not? resins are a fixed +damage and buffs require you to have a stat investment into either Int, Fai or both meaning you do less weapon damage than a pure Str/Dex/quality and their proper gemming.
Ofcourse like TrueArchery said some weapons are bonked either way.

Just tested the resins, dex, str int and Fai have no influence, my 20 Sorc and 100 Fai lightning thrower get the same damage buffs from the fire resin.
