Not many greatswords can use Stance either. I'm TERRIBLE at PvP, but I've nailed a few invaders with a sudden usage of the stance R1 and riposting them because nobody expects a Stance art from a greatsword (I've had success with this even with the Flamberge). Then getting at least one "free" R2 stance in becase they are expecting another shield breaker from closer range.
The moveset isn't "Terrible" with how useful thrusts are (plus counter bonus). But I will admit it's lacks in the way of "LOL PvP EZ Spam" if that's what you actually mean by "Good At All"
Oh, I know... I was rather disappointed they removed my rolling stab and horizontal slash but... What can you do... It does still have the range so there is that... If you can stomach the UGS, try profound or astora's. I've just not been very happy with the strength side of things here...
I keep one of those on me. They did spears pretty good this time around. They are still better to 2 hand but... Halberds are also a bit better this time around.
I tried to like DS3's Claymore, really I did, but I went back to the Zweihander. The Zwei just has better reach. In PvP I'm finding reach is everything when you're using something slow that you can't break out of. It's subtle, but the Claymore might be a bit faster recovery than the Zwei.
Fortunatley both greatswords are 1) low stat requirement and 2) easily accessible early game (much like DS1). I think both can get A scaling in STR (I know Zwei does with Infused Heavy + Slab).
Not a fan of Stance or Thrust with either. That's probably their weakness. It's also what makes them a little boring compared to late game greatswords.
I still think greatswords are viable in PvP, it just takes some careful planning and, of course, patience. You definitely can't be the button spammy type.
There are better weapons in terms of range and raw damage output, but for me, it's still better for its speed and flexibility. Good thrusts, good wide horizontal sweeps, and I still love the backstep into 360, even though its speed and range aren't quite what they were in 2. Can still catch players off guard with that if you are patient. And that's what it comes down to for PvP. Good weapon if you are patient and watch for your openings. And great for PvE, as it pretty easily stuffs most enemy movesets in one way or another.
Could also try the flamberge, as its moveset is near identical, minus the thrust R2, and supposedly it does more damage at +10, but I can't confirm. Also, it has bleed. Zwei is decent, though still an ultragreat, and too slow for my tastes.
That said, most things are viable for PvE and PvP. Just play around and find what is fun and works for you.
PD: The whips are ♥♥♥♥ and idk....i like whips.
