It's not what it was in DS2. I was a huge claymore user previously but it's just not the same. It will work, the moveset isn't terrible, just not ideal or how it used to be. There are better alternatives.

I dunno the exact Optimal Statistics situation but the Claymore itself is at least nice in theory, if you already can manage to hit people with a greatsword weapon.

Not many greatswords can use Stance either. I'm TERRIBLE at PvP, but I've nailed a few invaders with a sudden usage of the stance R1 and riposting them because nobody expects a Stance art from a greatsword (I've had success with this even with the Flamberge). Then getting at least one "free" R2 stance in becase they are expecting another shield breaker from closer range.

The moveset isn't "Terrible" with how useful thrusts are (plus counter bonus). But I will admit it's lacks in the way of "LOL PvP EZ Spam" if that's what you actually mean by "Good At All"

From is starting to piss me off, first the whips now my claymore... I mean a dude recommended Flamberge, but I hate the hard strike instead of thrust. In DS2, I'd dish out damage before my enemy landed a estoc or katana unexpectedly.

Oh, I know... I was rather disappointed they removed my rolling stab and horizontal slash but... What can you do... It does still have the range so there is that... If you can stomach the UGS, try profound or astora's. I've just not been very happy with the strength side of things here...

The Claymore's moveset in DkS2 was glorious.

What about the Dragonslayer Spear? I fairly get invaders in my PVP.

I keep one of those on me. They did spears pretty good this time around. They are still better to 2 hand but... Halberds are also a bit better this time around.

For PvP, you'll get easily parried just like any other greatsword using a vertical attack. Horizontal attack is where it's at for greatswords.

I tried to like DS3's Claymore, really I did, but I went back to the Zweihander. The Zwei just has better reach. In PvP I'm finding reach is everything when you're using something slow that you can't break out of. It's subtle, but the Claymore might be a bit faster recovery than the Zwei.

Fortunatley both greatswords are 1) low stat requirement and 2) easily accessible early game (much like DS1). I think both can get A scaling in STR (I know Zwei does with Infused Heavy + Slab).

Not a fan of Stance or Thrust with either. That's probably their weakness. It's also what makes them a little boring compared to late game greatswords.

I still think greatswords are viable in PvP, it just takes some careful planning and, of course, patience. You definitely can't be the button spammy type.

Clay is still my bread and butter, as it has been in DS1 and 2, for both PvE and PvP. No, it's not the godlike weapon it was in 2, but I'm still very comfortable with it, so I've stuck to it in 3 and been happy. Moveset is mostly the same as in 2, with some alterations to speed and range, but still one of the most varied movesets in that weapon class, with great coverage/damage/speed/stam usage. Scaling is kinda crap in 3, but refined infusion gets you standard DS2 scaling for quality builds. Elemental scaling infusion is just kinda crap all around, unfortunately.

There are better weapons in terms of range and raw damage output, but for me, it's still better for its speed and flexibility. Good thrusts, good wide horizontal sweeps, and I still love the backstep into 360, even though its speed and range aren't quite what they were in 2. Can still catch players off guard with that if you are patient. And that's what it comes down to for PvP. Good weapon if you are patient and watch for your openings. And great for PvE, as it pretty easily stuffs most enemy movesets in one way or another.

Could also try the flamberge, as its moveset is near identical, minus the thrust R2, and supposedly it does more damage at +10, but I can't confirm. Also, it has bleed. Zwei is decent, though still an ultragreat, and too slow for my tastes.

That said, most things are viable for PvE and PvP. Just play around and find what is fun and works for you.

*Gives Ember due to how whips need a revamp moveset just like how DaS2 did...*

Flamberge lacks that reach even if Claymore has the slow R2, that has saved me in various fights both in this game and 2... I think having anything for your weapon is vital, from magic to lighting can be what changes your odds to win... Flamberge is ok, just not my taste. I respect the weapon, and wish Claymore was more closer to damage but not where it makes others obsolete. I like my frost sword, but I guess you love what you win with.
