Was there a weapon that was surprisingly good to you?

For me, Gundyr's Halberd. Honetsly I just picked this weapon up just to do a PVP Gundyr cosplay, but the weapon turned out to be surprisingly good. I normally don't use halberds because I usually like to do full strength builds and for my love of great hammers, but Gundyr's Halberd only required 15 dex, which was accessable with the Hunter's Ring. It ended up being a good strength oriented halberd with good damage output and a nice reach for the relatively fast swing speed it has. Also the charging weapon art is somewhat predictable, but nice in catching and finishing off running away hosts or spirits. In the end Gundyr's Halberd became a new favorite to me and was one of the first weapons I maxed out.

Proffaned ultra greatsword.
I was all about my greatsword until I leveled them up to +10 and +5 each. The proffaned ultra greatsword had a total of 619 attack while the greatsword had 604. So I'm like "Ho well, it's just +15 but it could help" and F-CK! That +15 was more like twice the damage!

Most enemies only have a physical resistant component. Even more enemies are weak to either Lightning or Magic. In theory, you're absolutely correct, in practice, it works out a lot better than you may think. But a lot of bosses late game are very strong against lightning, but woe unto the person who doesn't carry a backup weapon right?

Like the thread says, what weapon surprised you, not what weapon is objectively amazing. For the same reasons you said, I thought the sword would be utter trash, but I end up using it in PVP and PVE a lot. And either I'm godlike in skill and terribly equipped to come away winning as often as I do, or this sword is actually pretty good despite theorcrafting saying otherwise. I'm hunble enough to assume the latter, and I'm flattered if you think the former.

Yeah, again I want to stress I'm not saying this is a fantastic weapon, I've been killed by enough Black Knight Greataxes to know what a truly good weapon is, lol.

Astora's Straight Sword. Beat like 90% of the game with it. It's light, fast, and doesn't consume stamina much. Sharpened to +10, with strength 30 and dexterity 20, it had around 322 damage. Now I'm on NG+ and using the Black Blade +10, which is also quite good. I really enjoy its parrying ability: it's great to use with a medium shield (Shield of Want) allowing WA.

i believe u, its just u are so nice, it surprised me. Im using dragonslayer spear sl 90, winning 95% of my duels.
