Those arent the same type of Giants. Yhorm is the type of Giant seen in Dark Souls 2. The rest of the giants you see around are from Dark Souls 1.

Yhorm has eyes, you can see them through the opening in his chain mail hood.
On a different note has anyone used it on the cursewood greatwood tree? In one of the descriptions somewhere it says "only a storm can fell a greatwood" so does it do extra dmg to the tree as well?
