Using the Zweihander as a primary weapon?

Dunno what it is about it, but I love this sword. But it's incredibly slow and sucks the stamina right out of you.

Is it capable for PVE and PVP or is it too much of a drain for competitive use? Also what's the best build for it? Like armor wise and gems etc etc.

PvE and PvP wise, this sword is actually more decent than you would think.
Slap an infusion in that bad boy and you are golden.

What's the best infusion for it? I had a fire gem on it until I found out that specific gem removes stat scaling.

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time building it up. I swapped over to the Hollowslayer greatsword, but It's just not the same as that nasty Zwei.

Zweihander is a classic weapon of the series, but I switched to astora greatsword just because it looks better
Other than that and weapon skill they are basically the same weapon, only good for pve though.

Pro: insane reach, broad swings
High stagger chance
Invincibility frame while swinging
Relatively high damage per swing
Con: very stamina inefficient
slow
Prone to hitting walls
Useless in pvp against skilled opponents

For greatswords you need alot of endurance. Im SL 90 and got 35 endurance + ring of favor and I will have enough for 3xL1 + a dodge roll before I need to regen with my Cathedral ultra greatsword. Fun as hell in pvp tough.
Works especially well against katanas.

The best thing it has going for it is the slash angle, reach and poise damage which can make a lot of PvE content trivial. Hyper-poise and the poise damage can also be quite handy in PvP ( might be harder vs very mobile and good players but not impossible ). I for one prefer either faster weapons for PvP or even harder hitting ones ( Yhorm's )... Zwei, somehow, doesn't feel right this time around... but that's just me and my playstyle.

I'ts an amazing sword, always used it on the previous ds games. It can be slow for pvp but refined it does some outstanding damage. You should practice with it.

Just because poise doesn't work the same way as in DS1, it doesn't mean that poise damage is irrelevant. If you are trading hits, hyper-poise + higher poise damage can get you ahead... or when people are blocking attacks.

poise stat barely has any effect on hyper armor.

try 1 poise hyper armor and 50,it makes no difference. you don't want 0 however.

it's ab obscure stat that was disabled.

Zweihander is a powerhouse since Dark Souls 1, go for it.
