Nah the bonfire level doesn't really do anything afaik.

You see your "bonfire level" anyway when looking what level of + you have on your estus.

Absolutely pointless and feels like it just slipped into the game from Dks2 (where every bonfire had a level and actually had a meaning)

For me, the explanation was, that the firekeeper keeps the bonfire alive, so they're directly connected to bonfires.

Yeah but you really level up the bonfire. DLC will probably introduce new bonfire level cap and new raid boss.
