Skeleton with hat in Catacombs

What is the deal with this one?

They keep the rolling skeletons alive, once you kill that one, the rolling dies aswell.

I'm not sure about that one specifically, but some of them control the skeleton balls. If you kill one that's down the big staircase (inside the small tunnel) with the first ball then it will crash into the iron bars and drop an estus shard

If it is the one who is hiding behind the place wher the boulder is rolling down the stairway, kill it and the bolder will get destroyed and drops a undead bone shard

I thought as well there some kind of secret around this skelly, but I think he is there just to bait you to the zone with lots of pots where part of them being traps. There is also another skeleton like him on the opposite side of the terrace with arcs.

I knew about the bone shard, also the other rolling ball when gets destroyed drops something good too but I dont remember exactly what, also everyother time it gets destroyed a little crab will spawn instead.

He's largely passive and just follows you. One of the big crabs in Smouldering Lake doesnt attack either. I have a feeling theres something going on with them. Perhaps like the pig in Souls 2 that digs up the pickaxe
