Depends on what you want to do, most npcs are safe to murder unless youre going specifically for achievements or need certain spells or want to follow their questline

Certain npc have their own questlines and some of their rewards are nice. After you end the game, and before proceeding to new game + you can kill every npc for some of their items if you want.

Andre gets pissed and you need to pay the price for him to talk to you again, the old chick jacks up her prices, the the fire keeper takes it like a submissive. Everyone else dies and gives you their ashes to get their stuff off the old hag (whatever inventory they have at the time of death)

What are you, a psychopath? Anyway, how did you not find a single item drop until now?

If you are running with no spells then the only npcs you shouldnt kill are greirat, andre, handmaiden, fire keeper and ludleth.

Siegward, Yoel, Yuria, Anri, Horace, Siris and Hawkwood all have questlines.

Irina of carim, Cornyx, Karla and orbeck are all safe to kill if you dont care about spells.

There's no quest marker like most other game though. Most of the npc quests are kinda based on encounters and it progress as you progress further into the game. If you kill them, you can only get like certain stuff only. Example if Leonhard, you won't be able to get his weapon if you kill him now before progressing on his questline. And some other stuffs. Check fextralife if you don't mind spoilers. If you don't care much on the rewards, then feel free to kill them lol

This game doesn't give you quests the way other RPGs do. There are just questlines you can follow. No indication of them, they just blend in to the flow of the world.

It's like, you know, real life, where you have to listen to people to understand what they're talking about and/or want. Without a magic marker in your head going off to tell you what to do after you blatantly ignored them, and no journal unless you literally keep a journal of ♥♥♥♥ to do
