The Elevator next to the main gate in Cathedral of the Deep, how do I access it?

So I'm through Cathedral of the Deep, defeated the boss, found all bonfires and basically did everything there is, except for this one elevator located next to the main entrance, when entering from the graveyard / courtyard area.
The elevator is down there, using the lever tells me the contraption doesn't work, so obviously I need to get down there, but how.
Any help is much appreciated.

Go for deacons bonfire backtrack hug your right wall there is narrow hallway and ta-daaa there is the elevator.

Also, the fall's not high enough to instakill you (but high enough to deal massive damage, usually enough to kill you anyway) so Spook/Silvercat Ring can be used to remove fall damage and essentially get you a bit of a shortcut. Handy knowledge for future playthroughs.

Hehe good to know, I did try jumping down but without that ring I took too much damage. Though it is helpful for NG+
