The fact that you rose from a coffin at the start of the game suggests that you were dead.

It's hard to be dead if you're undead, that's all I'm saying.
"The Darksign is the sign of an accursed Undead.

The Darksign returns its bearer to the last bonfire rested at, or the bonfire at Firelink Shrine, but at the cost of all souls held.

Carriers of the Darksign are reborn after death, and eventually lose their minds, turn Hollow. And so it is they are driven from their homeland."

You have the darksign, ergo, you are undead.

We are Undead, but what about Unkindled?

Those who lit the fire and sacrifice themselves to it are Lords of Cinder, they are worthy vessels to keep the flames lit. We are not, We are pathetic ash, unfit to light the fires. Therefor we must seek those that are, we seek the lords of cinder to keep the flames going, because we cant.

We can borrow the strength of the embers and become kindled briefly, but it is fleeting.
You are probably a lord of cinder who linked the flame in the past. Thats why you rise from your grave after the bell rings at the start of the game.
You are called champion of ashe and i believe its not because you collect the ashes of the other lords, but you are literally are made out of ashe.
Thats why you start burning once you use an ember. You kindle yourself with it.
Body made of ashe -> unkindled. However you sztill carry the dark sign because you used to be an undead human. Thats my theory

Hmm, I like this theory.
"No Unkindled can ever truly claim the embers that burn within a champion’s bosom, which is precisely what makes their yearning for warmth so keen.

Gain the strength of flame and increase max HP until death.

With the strength of fire, the summoning signs of Unkindled become visible, and seekers of embers can be summoned to join in co-operation. But beware the embers may also attract invaders."

Taken from the Ember item description.

By looking at this, it seems that as Unkindled, we have no fire of our own. We can borrow it, but we can never truly keep it, yet we yearn for it. We want to bring the lords of cinder back, to keep the fires lit, its what drives us.
it's basically like a really, really shtty undead.
I read somewhere that the unkindled were undead who tried to link the flame, but failed and were reduced to ash. And the Lords of Cinder were undead who succeeded in linking the flame without being incinerated.
According to an interview with miyazaki, unkindled are undeads who tried and failed to link the first flame.

You are basically the ashes of failures who are given a second chance, the last hope to save the world.

so in DS3 you are your ds1 self that choose to rage quit, delete the save file and restart the game after you punched your mouse so hard that it broke? I see...
What's with everyone reviving threads from April?
"Dark Souls had a story you ask?

Fret not my crestfallen children, for I shall reveal this to you!"

To tell the difference between undead and unkindled, first we must define what the undead from the first game was.

In the intro movie to Dark Souls you are shown that 4 beings gain lord souls and fight dragons and do all manner of swanky stuff. But that would be a lie, because only 3 of the lords are shown. The last lord, The Furtive Pygmy get only one line in the intro movie and is mentioned in the game NEVER AGAIN! (until the DLC shows up)

This is really interesting piece of lore because its the bigges "Chekhov's gun" in the game. He is presented by the author and everyone reading expects him to do something interesting later in the story. Because an author would not just waste space presenting a character that is not important for something.

The truth is that the pygmy is also the titular character of the game. He is actually the lord of the Dark Soul!

Three other lords spend their powers fighting stuff, building empired and breeding demons. The pygmy just disappere and do who knows what. But we know that he gave some of his power to other pygmies: Humans. Either by being the creator of humanity or by simply giving them power.

Aeons later no one remembers this. Some humans have a strange power though. They dont die when they are killed and they can do miraculous things. The problem being that the resurection is not perfect. They grow more and more hollow if they have ever died once, or for other reasons. To reverse this hollowing they need more of the power that originated from the dark soul. They use up this power when they die and over time. And when it gradualy fades, so does their consciousness and human sensibility.

They need Dark Soul power, or as everyone else calls it: "Humanity" Because its mostly just humans that have it. You can shove that Dark Hand up Smougs crevice all day, but you wont find any humanity. Because only humans have that. (And also rats for some reason.)

So what is an unkindled then? It is a person or a being that have tied themselves to the rekindled fire. In exchange for helping the rekindled fire sustain itself, you are given another form of immortality. And because the current fire draws its power from the remnants of all 4 lord souls it does not give the player the same drawbacks as the main character from the first game had, who could only use one of the powers.

You can use your own inherent humanity for an extra power boost of course. But good luck finding more humanity to reverse the hollowing if you should die. Maybe the fire keeper still have som?

Um, unless you missed it:

The dark fireshrine tells you basically that this is a type of purgatory.

If you help all the NPCs complete their destinies, they then die and you find their gear / items usually at their graves.

To explain: as Undead they have to fulfill their quests in order to die peacefully. Those who fail, or give up or betray themselves go hollow.

There are no living humans in this world - even Patches isn't.

To be fair, Patches isn't even a being as we know it. Considering he somehow sided with the Great Ones in BB, he probables conned his way into dimension/time hopping, which explains why he's ever present in every game, lol.

It sounds like this is a question we need VaatiVidya to answer, hopefully we see in our sub box soon "VaatiVidya: Unkindled vs Undead"

I guess you need to watch his Londor vid then :p
unkindled are the people that were granted true death but brought back to rekindle the flame and bring the lords back to their thrones
