What causes estus refills?

it's been happening to me quite alot. in DS1 it was whenever someone kindled a bonfire, but what triggers it here? i can't find a definitive answer.

You fill up a hidden meter every time you kill an enemy, and when the meter gets filled you get an extra estus flask.

From what I know, killing players in most or all situation gets you a estus or 2

I think it's just random, based on the amount of enemies you killed

people who light bonfires in their world usually procs it. that's what it was in the first souls game.

I wonder if a unlimited estus luck build would be viable.

To my knowledge, estus refills are only caused in 2 cases. You get a guaranteed refill whenever an enemy phantom is killed. And in rare cases, when a regular mob dies, you will get an estus refill. You can see the golden wisp head toward your character like souls.

in pve it'll happen every so ften...i was thinking it wroked more on the lines of everytime you get 5000 souls from enemies you get one. Although i was meaning to test this.

They seem to more often I feel.
But not always from my tests.

I don't think so. Some monsters always have glowing red eyes

No, I believe those enemies are just more powerful variants of normal enemies. I've only noticed it after killing many enemies or a phantom.

The first game it was people kindling bonfires, not lighting them.

I've had it happen a few times when I was just running around.

when any phantom dies, host and other phantoms get 1 estus charge back if its not full already. Come to think,t hat may be whys ome people are claiming some invaders are able to chug as furiously as I manhandle myself while thinking of wonder woman.

I just managed to get two estus flasks when I killed an invading NPC phantom.
