Can anyone tell me the answer to this, I'm sure I can look it up but I don't want to spoil anything else so just the answer to this please:

Does GrieRat die the second time you send him out? He's been gone for a long time...

It seems unlikely to me that this game would remove a merchant without providing you with their ashes.

Just saying.
I've only ever sent him out on two, and I haven't checked if he's back yet.
I agree, but it wouldn't be the first time that doing something too many times kills an NPC. Personally I figured it would be more than that but it's seriously been a LONG time. He's been gone everytime I return to firelink, which is like 10 times at least.

The first item you give the bird will always be the gesture.

Yes.
No that's not how it works, the different items you give the bird the different things it trades you. For instance, the only thing I've traded the bird for is the beer that you get from Seigmeyer, and in return he gave me the chest piece from solaire.
Maybe it's the specific item you used, since it's unique. Otherwise the first time you trade something it should always be the gesture. Look it up.

Like Chosokabe said, if you don't do Seigwards quest, Greirat will die. You can find his ashes in a sewer near the Distant Manor Bonfire in the Boreal Valley

"Regardless of which item you dropped, the first time you trade with the crow in a playthrough, she will give you the Call Over gesture."

And I think most people can probably confirm that this is true.. You evidently got something different, but like I said it might be that specific item.

Well then it must be wrong? Because the first item I gave the crow was Seigbreu and I didn't get a gesture.

It's a wiki, I can change it right now if that will make you feel better.

I gave the bone to the crow on my first playthrough. I got a Ring of Sacrifice.
Grierat never asked to go on thieving runs for me, and I bought many, many, many throwing knives from him, so it's not because I never spoke to him.

I gave him the bone on subsequent playthrough, and he does ask me to go on thieving runs as he should.

I have never recieved his gesture. ...I assume it's the squat pose. I've never gotten it.

So in my experience, the bone is what allows him to upgrade his inventory. And mystery magic is what makes him give you the gesture.

If you have been doing Siegward's questline and gotten him out of the well then you can rest at ease that Greirat will survive his trip to Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. However, if you have not done the first part before, then yeah, he's dead and you'll find his ashes to give to the Shrine Maiden when exploring Irithyll.

Dude I'm telling you: It was probably the unique item you used. Before you go trying to change the wiki, why don't you confirm your suspicion by starting a new game and placing something else, like rubbish or a firebomb. If you get something other than the gesture, you may have discovered something that contradicts what everyone else believes to be true. As far as we know, the only way to get the call gesture is to trade an item with the crow - the first item you trade, not a specific one.

"Go trying to change the wiki" like anyone needs to do anything more than click the "edit" button on the site.

ANY person can change ANY thing on ANY wiki at ANY time. You do understand that right? I've written quite a few things in the wiki myself already for DS3 because I had the japanese version early.

I don't know if you're just trying to argue with me, or figure this thing out.. I don't care if you change the page because I already know how the system works. Here's a suggestion, Go edit the wiki to say ""Regardless of which item you dropped, the first time you trade with the crow in a playthrough, she will give you the Call Over gesture - UNLESS you use the Seigbreu first, then you might get something different, but who knows this is still unconfirmed."

I literally just made this for you, this is my new character who hasn't traded anything with the crows yet. I'm not "just trying to argue with you," I am literally just saying that whoever wrote that in the wiki was wrong, and they are. Here is confirmation:
https://youtu.be/gQIaYkJjTKI?t=2m10s
(it just finished processing, give it a few minutes to be HD 1080p60)

The wiki must just be incorrect, whatever you get from the birds even for the first trade, is entirely dependent on what item you drop. Each item you drop turns into a specific item in return. Video proves this 100%.... Not to mention the list I linked to you earlier. My first playthrough I traded the Siegbrau first, this time I traded a firebomb first. That's two different items traded first with no gestures being received. I did get a gesture for the homeward bone so that must be it's specific trade.

Every Souls game has been this way, not counting DS2's ridiculousness... The wiki is just wrong.

Ya unfortunately I must have missed him along the lines, he was not in Irithyll dungeon when I went there like he was supposed to be so I screwed it all up... thank god for multiple playthroughs. Gives me another reason to go through again so no biggy. :)
