HOW TO NOT GET BANNED

Don't put any files into your game folder (sweetFX, ENB, mods of any kind)
Don't attach any programs to the game client (CE)
Don't run any third party software (trainers)
Don't edit your character or use any exploits to alter permanent variables (items, stats, level, souls)

You'll get banned for any of this, whether you do it offline or not. The second you come online you'll be flagged and banned in the next wave.

They have:
Client: Anti-cheat which checks for modifications to running memory (codecaves), and probably injection (address writes).
Server: Data verification keeping track of all of your characters information, comparing it to hidden variables (eg lifetime kills), and looking for discrepencies.
Server: Integrity check verifying all game files

Some players have bypassed the anti-cheat using various methods (able to use CE without getting banned), but they can't do ♥♥♥♥ about the server dection. They won't know when their cheats become detectable serverside until they are already banned.

Any update could be a stealth fix for CE detection, and they have no way to tell because the bans come 2-3 weeks after they are detected.

I'm led to believe the game doesn't detect cheats when used offline. i.e. you can spawn in a premade build with CE or whatever while offline, restart your game without CE, and use the cheated build while online, without penalty (as long as it's theoretically possible, so you need to have the normal stats for your SL). This is just theory though, might be low SL run players.
Source: repeatedly invaded by level ~20 ornstein/artorias/lorian and lothric cosplayers in HWoL

Also: some legitimate players got caught in the first banwave, though it was very uncommon, and (at least to my knowledge) they haven't had a false positive since the first few waves

As long as it's a megamule save file rather than a script, I think you ought to be fine. Just go offline to actually load the save in and all that stuff if you can.

lol the first post is so wrong... you can use almost anything without getting banned, as long as it's not something not legit that gets stored in your save. and lately there's even people getting warned/banned for no reason because of false positives.

by the way, the mod "souls unsqueezed" and x360ce are safe.

I'm using borderless windowed mod (Souls "Unsqueezed" - available on Steam), can I get banned for using it? It does nothing but makes windowed mode borderless. I have to play windowed as fullscreen has some nasty screen tearing that nothing can solve - running on Ultra, i7 4790k + GTX 1070

The only thing I use is kaldaiens unsqueeze-mod to fill my 21:9 screen No issues so far.
