I got a pretty good view of the 'dungeon' area after putting down White Soapstone signs... you don't lose ANYTHING if you die as a white phantom, so it's a good way to explore new places (and whoever you help probably enjoys having someone else die for them instead). Run around slash things up without worrying and focus on how the rooms are connected and where the enemies are.

Long story short... the bonfire is in a short corridor that has a bunch of cells and leads to the 'main' area. The main area has two floors (there's some other floors further down that are visually in the same room, but they're inaccessible from this part of the main area). The top floor is shaped like a "H", the bottom floors are linear and only connected to the same side of the H.
If you turn right as you reach the main corridor, there's a locked door at the far end that becomes a shortcut to the 'cave' area - the key is called Jailbreaker's Key and found in a room somewhere on the bottom floor of the main dungeon area. You can't get there yet, but remember it once you get the key.
To progress... cross the bridge of the H (you have to take out several handmaids... they go down quickly if you rush them with a big sword before their debuffs start affecting you). Find the stairs to the lower floor on this side of the H. If I remember correctly, you need to go through several cells the first time (unlocking a shortcut). The stairs are guarded by some handmaids and there's other enemies around as well... proceed carefully. Turn left and advance to a hole that leads to a big cave. You're kinda safe out here, so feel free to steel yourself for what's next. Once you see two Pyramid Head kinda guys further down, proceed with care - there's a third one behind a pillar on your right.
The area ahead has a mimic and a LOT of these new pyramid head guys around the corner. You might want to lure a bunch at a time and kill them - there's a ladder early on in the room to the next area, but you'll have to get past an aggressive giant. At the far end of the room with the pyramid head guys, there's a drop to another part of the giant's room out of his reach, and while you take a bunch of fall damage, it's a lot safer to take this path. Proceed carefully to a sewer area with respawning rats.
There's an ambush with lots of basilisks if you explore the actual sewer area, so you'd actually enter a cave on the right side instead. You'll end up in the bottom floor of the 'main' room from before... in a room with 3 giant rats, so be prepared for that.

Once you're in the main room, take care - there's two sets of 4 handmaidens patrolling around the room in a circle. You might want to either lure them out or sneak in between their patrols. There's one of the crucified guys in a cell on the right-hand side that aggroes on both the handmaids AND you, so if you're feeling brave you could release him and hope he helps you out, but I'd recommend just running through safely and come back later to loot once you've got a bonfire on the other end. On the other side of this room is another opening to the cave - and there's a bonfire in the middle of that big tower, but you need to climb down a ladder and then up another ladder. But... the bridge is guarded by a gargoyle. They're not as dangerous as they look if you keep your guard up and have a weapon with a guardbreak attack (most swords) but you shouldn't underestimate them - they do upwards of 400 damage with a clean hit. There's a nice big flat surface next to the bridge that's ideal to lure the gargoyle to so that it's easy to fight him... DON'T fight him on the bridge unless you need to. Once you arrive at the tower, take it easy so you don't actually fall down. The bonfire should be visible from the first platform you see, but remember that you need to climb up and down to get it.

To reach the boss room... slide down the ladder on the outside of the tower next to the bonfire, run down the bridge (past a gargoyle), get inside the building, jump down the stairs carefully, run right, just run past the gargoyle that shows up and take the first turn left into a corridor. You should see either a boss room or a mist door. The enemies has huge trouble fitting in the corridor, but hurry to the boss room anyway.

Yeah I know how to get through the area, what I was going for is that some phantom just runs past the enemies to the next bonfire and I follow him. But it's fine anyway since I'm doing it on my own now.
