Not much of a point, really, unless you want to loot the areas without having to deal with them, or maybe if you have trouble fighting in the mud.
Nope. Actually they just connect to walls and railings. There is one that connects to a deceptively enticing ledge, but if you try to walk over it you will slip and fall.

Anyway. Again, the giants do follow you, you just have to be very patient and have them follow you slowly, step by step. If you get too far away they'll resort to poo-flinging and eventually they'll go back to sleep.

I just keep a dagger handy to use the weapon art to get through slow areas like swamps and sludge. Actually turns out faster than sprinting in most cases so the giant in the big pool of sludge on your way to the deacons has never posed much of a problem for me. I get the idea of trapping them and it is a very good idea, they just kind of made it pointless when you have the daggers weapon art handy.
