Now about dark miracles. Dark miracles are dark spells (there are also dark sorceries and dark pyromancies). They are basically the hexes magic school of DS2 (the 4th magic type).
Dark magic differs from regular magic as it scales differently. Dark spells need int AND faith at the same level to scale (if you have 40 int and 10 faith the game will pick 10/10 for the scaling).
Also those spells need a catalyst scaling with dark magic (it's stated in the catalyst description if it's for dark magic).
There are 4 catalysts : izalith staff for dark sorceries, caitha chime and sunless talisaman for dark miracles and the pyromacy flame is already a dark catalyst (so it can cast pyro and dark pyro from the start).
You can use other catalysts but you won't deal much damage with them since they don't have the dark scaling so (here goes the maths) 0 scaling * any stat = 0 bonus damage.
To check which spell is a dark or not, you need to look at the icon, dark spells have a darker scroll and are usually black. most also have specific names like dark/black/deep prefix (deep soul, dark fire orb, black serpent etc.). Some spells that don't seem dark at first but are : vow of silence, attonement, gnaw ( dark miracles), pestilent mercury (dark sorcery).
PS : I repeat myself but you need a dark catalyst to use them, a regular int/faith catalyst (like crystal chime or white hair talisman) won't work (those are for casting regular spells from 2 magic schools).
That clears it up quite a bit thank you.
But if you manage to use dark miracles well, then I'll applaud you. You shouldn't be afraid to test out anything, and you should always try to do what's fun to you. Dark miracles being ♥♥♥♥ doesn't mean you shouldn't try them.
I personally love Dorhy's Gnawing and Dead Again with stacked miracle rings. Also, using Sunless Talisman. Basically any dark build requires you to invest heavily in faith and intelligence to work.
