Does anyone know how From Software decides upon such names like Anor Londo and Yharnam . Where does these name come from . Do they even have an origin or meaning ?

Apparently the word "Anor" is derived from a fictional language called Elvish (created by J.R.R. Tolkien) which means "sun" and "Londo" meaning "city".

So the this could be evaluated as "City of the Sun".

If that's true, then New Londo would mean "New City".

Basically the people at From are probably big fans of Tolkien's mythos as well as other works and takes inspiration from them. There are other theories as there's no official confirmation but this is just one of them.

I read somewhere that Anor is Sun and Londo means Moon . So new Londo could also mean new Moon . And there is a Moon in New Londo .

I am even curious if anyone knows how authors like Lovecraft named his Old Ones .

Say names like Cthulhu or Yog Sothoth . Are these anagrams or something else . How do people come up with such names ?

speaking about the expansion Andariel and Ariandel are one and the same . They are anagrams .

For those uninitiated Andariel is boss of Diablo 2's first ACT .

I am seeing a pattern here , surely there is some logic behind all the names .

If we can crack how Lovecraft named his creatures we will crack the whole issue . Is it all connected to Black Speak / Black Tongue by J R R Tolkien ?

They hit the keyboard with their heads. Or back then the typewriter.

EDIT: Cthulu is also from a myth, so he stole names too.

Also more proof that Londo means / has something to do with MOON .

1. Undead Marriage Questline ends there . That quest item has a moon symbol on it . It could mean the marriage of Sun And Moon . Day And Night . Fire (Ash) And Dark (undead).

2. The Black Sun / The Black Moon rises up during the end . Whatever it is , it symbolizes the reign of a new kind of Dark .

I don't think they did . Nothing is arbitrary . This is Dark Souls . I can guarantee everything in the Souls Universe has deep deep meeaning . Depends what you can perceive .

The language was heavily inspired by the work of Tolkien and can be translated to some dgree. With Anor Londo translating to either "City of Sun" or "City for Gods". The new DLC name can't be translated yet but I can roughly translate a counterpart of it to "Father of Men".

Quenya. Black Speech is the language of Rhun and the surrounding areas. Quenya is the most common language spoken by the Elves.

Yeah. It's like french with multiple words for everything based on the emotion behind what your saying. It's very hard to learn.

No, Quenya is the classic language for Noldor and other High Elves tribes. Then, Sindarin is daily used by exiled Noldors and Elves of Middle-Earth.

See that's where it gets confusing. Both the books and films use Quenya, Sindarin and Telarin.
