It's all very vague, to be quite frank, and I don't think you can label "good" or "evil" on anything in this game. Except maybe Aldricht, coz man that ♥♥♥♥♥♥'s evil.
It's all a matter of perspective. On one hand, linking the flame preserves the fire and keeps the cycle going. On the other hand, bringing on an age of dark ends the suffering that the cycle seems to constantly bring, and quite possibly could eventually spark another, better, cycle of flame. On the other foot, usurping the flame takes the power from the Gods (Gwyn, Gwynevere, Lords of Cinder, etc) and gives it to the Hollows.
Which one you think is best depends entirely on your perspective and view on things. None of them are necessarily good nor evil.
EDIT: Mandatory Hat Skeleton reply, brb discussing philosophy over the corpses of the hat skeletons while i farm them for their 0.0001% drop rate hat
The whole covenant is based around disrupting the flame and in turn, the cycle, as well as attempting to kill those who don't usurp the flame and causing overall chaos.
The way I understand it, the Age of Dark isn't the age of man and it will not end the cycle. Kaathe/The Sable Church now understand this so they want you to usurp it instead.
from what i understand of the lore, the fire was never supposed to stay lit, gywn forcefully re-lit it because he feared what the humans may become so thats where the cycle of flame comes from and by usurping the fire you steal the flame so that it wont be relit and so the age of humanity can finally start, but thats just my opinion on it all
Anri doesn't die, she/he is right there at the ending cutscene. Swords through the face aren't as lethal as they used to be. The only one she wants you to kill is that sorcerer guy. I guess he just rubs her the wrong way.
Although, I guess Siegward promised him that he would put him down if he ever became Hollow, so it is a mercy killing...
