What is the death penalty in DS3?
I just beat Dark Souls 2 yesterday, and earlier in the year, I beat DS1 twice. But in my personal opinion, the penalty for dying Dark Souls 2 was absolutely stupid. I hated it. I hated coming back with a little less health every time I die (until it reaches 50%) in a game where you will die A LOT, and the only way to get it back was to use a Human Effigy, and those things aren't exactly the most common of items. Sure, you could limit it with the ring of binding, but that's an extra ring slot that I could using for something else.

Now the question remains; What is it like in Dark Souls 3? I preffered in Dark Souls 1 where when you die, you just couldn't summon, and lost your souls. I tried to search around for this answer myself, but I couldn't really take in what was being said. Something to do with Embers, and Dark Sigils, and a hollowing level? If someone could explain how this system works, I'd be really grateful. Every person that I heard try to explain it just edned up confusing me even more.

Whats wrong with losing more health as you die, its a sign of degrading and you arent totally unable to cure the status. It just makes death more relevant than what DS3 has. Its like asking why you lose health when you get attacked../.

Your default state is unembered. You can't summon or be invaded. You look normal.

When embered you have 30% more health, can summon, and can be invaded. The edges of your clothing get an orange glow like they're about to burst into flame.

When you die you become unembered, drop your souls where you died, and get ported to the last bonfire. If you follow a certain story path you will become more hollowed, which makes you look like a slim jim but does not have any other negative consequences.

Well for starters this is not DS 2 so you dont lose health when you die. Its practicly Ds 1 but instead of humanities you get embers, and they're everywhere.

About the hollowing thing, there is a person called Yoel of Londor that if you speak to and ''Draw out true strength'' then practicly you get 5 free levels and if you draw out the strength once then youre cursed with the hollowing, it goes up to 99 and you start off with 1 after you die and the more times you die the more hollowing you will have and the more dark sigils (5 max). With 5 sigils you can get 5 free levels but when you're hollow you just look like a hollow, there is no penalty apart from looking like a withered testicle, and there is also a ring that makes you look human so yea the hollowing doesnt matter.

Hope that helped! :praisesun:

Both of these were very helpful! Thank you guys. Sounds to me like I'll have a much better time in DS3 than I did in DS2. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed DS2, but I will forever have a hatred of that mechanic.

DS1 didn't need this mechanic to be a great game. And it was a fantastic game. Again, it's just one man's opinion. I just thought it was highly unnecessary. It sucked when I would take on a boss that would require quite a few tries to beat, then he would end up widdling down my health, then I'd use an Effigy to get it back, then die to said boss enough times to where using the Effigy the first time was completely negated. Needless to say, I'm happy it's not in DS3, and I can't wait to play it now.

Maybe it's just a product of getting used to how the game feels and plays in its combat. Just simply getting used to the type of game. When I first decided to play DS1, after the first day of trying it, I honestly thought I wasn't gonna be able to finish it, it was so hard, and way different than any type of game I had played before. Day 2 of playing it, however, I already started to get used to how the combat mechanics worked, and had a much more fun time playing it. Eventually I mastered the "Invinciblity frames" roll on almost every enemy and boss. NG+ on DS1 after the first time beating it was cake. DS2 didn't give me too many problems either once I got back into the swing of things cause there was a bit of a gap between me finishing DS1 and starting DS2, but regardless, you're still gonna die numerous times. It's a 'Souls game :D

I think a big part of why some people find it easier is just how tight the combat is now. I went back and played dark souls 1 again and it feels incredibly clunky

Yeah, I haven't touched DS3 yet, but I can just tell from watching gameplay that the combat and everything looks so polished and smooth.

yeah i am ok with the thing you said, i like very much ds3 but i can't see him like a souls game because i don't see where is the difficulty and if is not another player or a boss is just easy to stay alive, in the other dark souls when you die you receive a good punishing effect or malus that make the game more dificult but this one i hear that the productor of the game make the game more easy .like that more people can finish the game, i have no problem with that , but if is not for pvp i ' would't play this dark soul 3, and sorry for my inglish but is not my bether language

When you die your character gets permanently deleted and you have to restart the game from the beginning.

DS1 has no debuff for dying. So actually that's the least punishing.
