I Killed the Chump in the Cage Because He Annoyed Me

are you sure? I don't think killing the talking caged guy does anything.

You don't need to talk to the cageman to access the Mound Makers just not kill the Greatwood before you enter the cage to be transported to the pit.

The only thing you need to do is not aggro the walker with the cage to get in it.

He auto-aggroed me when I killed the nana guy on my first playthrough.

He didn't for me, I just snuck up on him rather then walking from the front.

There were a few patches that made easier questlines/joining covenants. It was vague, but maybe this was one of the changes? That now you can kill the nanaguy?

I didn't test myself, so I dunno if killing him will make the big guy attack you or not.

Very possible, I tried at launch day (or the day after), so I don't know.

Untrue I did it day 1 and didn't have any issues sneaking up on the cage carrier. He only get annoyed when you kill the guy if you approach him from the front.

Cooincidentally, I just joined the Mound Makers. I didn't originally have this option, but when I went back to the Greatwood door, I got a sign to cooperate, and ended up with MM covenant. I killed Greatwood a long time ago.

He has to be alive for you to be able to climb in to the cage of the guy who drops you into the pit, I'm pretty sure.

I kill the caged guy every single playthrough. He's some good free souls early on. Sometimes I talk to him, because I like what he says, sometimes I don't, I just kill him and move on. Every single time, the big guy with the cage on his back remains passive, and I'm able to freely climb into the cage and join the MadBros.

The only thing that matters is not killing the Greatwood first. If you kill the Greatwood, the guy with the cage turns hostile and you lose early access to the MadBros. If you do this, you have to do Sirris' questline, which ends with helping her defeat Holy K***t **drick, allowing you access to his armor and the MadBros covenant.
