Is it worth spending the scale thingies to upgrade Shield of Want?
Just found the Shield of Want and the stats right off the bat seem pretty cool (as does the look) but it takes those special blue scales to upgrade, is it worth it, or could I get a just as good or better shield without using the rarer upgrade materials that I might need for something else?

It has good stats for it's weight but the Lothric shield or Silver Knight shield have better stats and can parry, although they weight a lot more.

Kind of spoilers regarding scales:

You can find ashes that provide you with infinite Twinkling Titanite and Titanite Scales later on at the Dragon area.

Assuming you want the Shield of Want for it's passive disc buff, the really solid stats, and the Weapon Art L2, it's the best.

Not entirely sure upgrading it increases the disc buff, but if nothing else upgrade it for the better stability which is already pretty high.

I personally prefer the Black Knight Shield, more stability and also has weapon art instead of parry, but it's heavier and the Shield of Want has that nice bonus exp and discovery, plus what Rinera said.

Not really. The shield is already good enough, and all you'd get is some additional stability.

If you need a better shield for a particular stretch, you can switch to something that uses normal or twinkling titanite, and then you can use the Shield of Want the rest of the time.

lothrik is was using before finding the shield of want, love that xp bonus though, also the shield of want looks more proportionate with my longsword.

The hollow ashes? I actually just found them 5 minutes ago because I've been playing the dragon path since posting this question.

No, the Dragon Chaser's Ashes, they're at the very end of Archdragon Peak

Go for it, the Shields actually pretty damned good for its weight

If you want a shield and you're on a weight budget, pound for pound, Shield of Want is the best shield value in the game and more than worthy of upgrading. If you have weight to spare and want better stability or protection, upgrade something else.
