DARK SOULS™ III

DARK SOULS™ III

What was the most disappointing area in each Dark Souls Game for you?
- Dark Souls 1 --> Lost Izalith

While getting to Lost Izalith was particulary amazing, especially going through Demon Ruins... the whole "long hallways" and the stupid firebreathing statue like monsters for me were quite disappointing. I do enjoy the concept that all the "lava" in Lost Izalith was once most likely water, as the city has a lot of waterways. Oh, Bed Of Chaos what have you done. Also mostly what I remember of Lost Izalith is a brown color because there were not many colors down there even though it was supposed to be a city.

- Dark Souls 2 --> The whole game except Majula (great design and music choice)

I'm still especially mad at the Heide's Tower of Flame design choice...
A damn city that's underwater with a lot of buildings, but no, they decided to make it a 3-way linear path with no platforming / jumping / shortcuts or even going into buildings... this area had SO MUCH POTENTIAL. Then again, all areas in the game felt bland.

In DarkSouls 2 I'll never get over the fact that I need the souls of the 4 most powerful demons in the land to open a door to the shrine of winter just to "go over" some rubble that's blocking the path. It would've been easier to get to earthen peak and hire the contractor to remove the stupid rubble.

- Dark Souls 3 --> Profaned Capital

I don't know when I heard about the Profaned Capital in-game I imagined going through some sort of "Anor Londo" part 2 to get there, mostly it was going through the excavation in Irythill Dungeon, but when I was high a top and saw the view I was like "Wow, this place is huge" and shouted to see if Yhorm could hear me. Then I saw the area was so small... and linear... there were no shortcuts or pathways... just linear...zzzz.... great "capital" you have here Yhorm... then I saw that the bridge to the "city" is cutout zzz....

By disappointing, you mean too short ?

Havent played the first one, I know I should. Its in my library since months, untouched.

I played alot of DS2 and I have to agree that the first time I enter Heides Tower, I was amazed by the view. That map is so beautifull. But like you said, damn short and linear. But to me, most disappointing area was Shaded woods. Fighting lions...wth ?

In DS3 my least favorite area is Farrons Keep. That whole poisoned water area makes me turn off my game each NG+. Its not making the game more difficult, its only making it more annoying. I guess that no matter the game, I will always hate water maps.
DS1 - I guess we're all gonna agree about Izalith. Even Miyazaki calls the area (and the boss) a disappointment. I usually dislike that kind of fiery color palette on its own, which makes it even worse.

Other than that, I can't really think about an area I don't properly enjoy navigating every single time in that game, let alone one that disappointed me. Maybe the basin and the woods. I do like them, but it's the one part of the game I don't enjoy as much as the rest. The Crystal Caves too. It's a beautiful place, but it's an ass to travel through.

DS2 - As for you, pretty much the entire game was a disappointment when it comes to the world. Hell, one of the four properly pretty areas (Shrine of Amana) is ruined by pure gameplay bullshitting.

But for me, the absolutely worst part hands down is Drangleic Castle: It should've been the Anor Londo Moment of DS2, it does look pretty amazing from the outside (missing DoF and lackluster rain effects notwithstanding), but once you get inside you're treated to the worst case of empty, small square rooms with ridiculously small tiled textures in a game that suffers from those issues all the time. Plus the layout is complete balls, it doesn't make any sense, it's a pain in the ass to navigate, and it just doesn't look like a real place, where people would've lived at some point. When you run into a painting haging on a wall, which should've been a normal sight, it stands out like a sore thumb being just so logical, against all the nonsense around. The absolute nadir is the throne room, the place where the royalty would display all their might for visitors and residents to admire is a sorry-ass backroom that looks more like an empty warehouse than anything else.

To add insult to injury, Drangleic Castle is the one area where the SotFS edition not only doesn't improve at all, it actually makes matters even worse, just throwing random enemies without reason or rhyme all over the place --I mean, they put a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (rehashed) horse inside a main hall!

DS3 - Profaned Capital was a disappointment for me as well, largely because it's way too small; but what little there is, I did love to bits: The visuals, the enemies, the traps, even the admittedly gimmicky boss was cool as it gave Onionbro's quest an awesome climax. If it had been larger and had a more complex layout (I'm thinking Undead Settlement-style), and a building distribution that made it look like an actual city, it would've been one of my top-3 areas of the game.

That said, the one area that was a massive, unforgivable disappointment for me was actually the Kiln: It's basically a short, narrow path leading up to a boss fog, and that's that. The Kiln in the first game opened with the simple yet amazing void with the ghostly knights, then the blown up path that was a gorgeous sight and an actual challenge to traverse, and only then, the boss fight. And the fact that both share the same name makes it so much worse.

The actual arena where you fight SoC is great, though.
Worst
Dark Souls 1:
Darkroot Garden, home of the Giantdad (I hate that meme)

Dark Souls 2:
Forest of Fallen Giants mainly for that repeating floor texture where the fire salamaders reside

Dark Souls 3:
Irithyll Dungeon. Took the rough design of Tower Of Latria from Demon's but forgot what made that area terrifying

Gonna add some best as well because who needs negativity, right?

Best
Dark Souls 1:
Painted World. Nice change of scenery and beautiful area

Dark Souls 2:
Dragon Aeirie. Stepping into that area and seeing the dragons flying overhead is still amazing

Dark Souls 3:
The butresses leading up to Anor Londo. Cheesy as it sounds, seeing those Silver Knight Archers felt like being home...A home of torture...A home of pain and abuse

Like living with Josef Fritzl :^)

I actually can't think of any disappointing areas for any.

This and this SO MANY TIMES.
But like I said, what can you expect from a game that wants you to seek the 4 most powerful souls of demons in the land to get over some pile of rubble...

In DS1 it was to open a magnificent door to the kiln of the first flame
Same with DS3.
But DS2? Open a door to a stupid shrine because there is rubble in the original pathway, so if the rubble wasn't there... then... what?

I hope Bloodborne is ported to PC someday or that I get someone with a PS4 to borrow to play it, all the visuals I saw looked STUNNING ,like places I really want to explore.

For me these areas were the most disappointing
DS1- Ash Lake
It's so tiny with such a great covenant and potential, but it's really only there for the dragon covenant.
DS2 the whole game was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disappointment.
DS3 the smoldering lake is surprisingly empty for its large size...

Oooooh
You reminded me of Smoldering Lake, that's how forgettable it is ...
I thought I was going to get to go through Ruins of Lost Izalith or something, I was VERY EXCITED when things came up on my screen "SMOLDERING LAKE"
and excted to find the spider lady... but yeah, it was disappointed as hell, I thought it was going to be a revised version of Lost Izalith from DS1... but no, just a generic cave / maze... zzz....zz.z...zzzz and a Balista that makes no lore sense what so ever... zzz.z..z.z

I think the Demon Ruins / Smoldering Lake in DS1 was better.

with no platforming / jumping
While I agree with you picks this is just stupid imo. Platforming is easily the worst part of Dark Souls, the most hated areas by the community are places where you fall to your death for seemingly no reason and the most hated boss is one that requires a stupid jump to kill. Platforming is bad in these games since jumping is bad.

Does Anor Londo trigger you?
It triggered me, its basically "Super Mario Souls" with the cathedral and the palace.
Dks1: blight town
Dks2: shrine of Amana
Dks3: all of them dragon peak

The archers trieggered me, not so much the rest of it. But any place where you have to make a jump to get a shiny item (even if you know you don't need it, it taunts you wiht its shinyness)
DS1: Blighttown (FPS problem, etc.), Lost Izalith (empty and unfinished, duh)

DS2: Bell areas, because PvP sucked ass there, the area before Najka because it was small, wtf with lions and boring, Brightstone Cove Tseldora because I hate spiders and it was unnecessarily long and boring, Drangleic castle cuz, boring empty and illogical. I wouldn't say EVERY area sucked in DS2 tho.

DS3: Profaned Capital, as said in OP, and I found Anor Londo to suck too. There is an awesome fight, the whole area is epic, BUT it's one of the smallest areas. Everyone forgot the Aldritch bossfight because the whole area is just as small as the Profaned Capital. And the silver knight farming...................................................................................

I like that people are calling Dark Souls zones illogical.

The fact that that is a serious complaint is kind of hysterical.

Well it is...some areas are so geographically wacky it breaks the immersion, something Souls is rather good at setting.

?? What is the problem with that argument? You go up in an elevator in a tower that connects to nothing. And then you leave the elevator, and get to a big ass castle that is being consumed by lava (as I said earlier, this castle that is in a big pool of lava, cannot be seen from outside, it just doesn't exist.). Or when you go below the ocean level and get to a cave that leads into the ocean. It IS a serious problem. It means that the developers didn't know what they were doing, and it shows in other areas of the game too. Like the SM system, instead of making new enemies using enemies from the beginning making the whole lore inconsistent...

Well, instead of illogical I should've used the world inconsistent.
