Black screen after closing DS3?
Hello,

It seems since the recent windows 10 update, when I exit Dark Souls 3 from the menu, I am just left with a black screen and it doesn't return to my desktop?

I'm being left having to restart my PC as I just can't see anything but black.

Has anyone had this?

I have the same problem for two days now, actually since I got the win 10 anniversary update.

I usually play in big picture mode on my tv. I can start and exit the game normally, but as soon as I open the overlay and visit the forum - it can be boring when you are waiting to be summoned - I end up with a black screen when I exit the game. It does not crash, the controller still works, you just have a black screen. If I unplug and replug the tv, the screen goes back to normal.

I am not sure whether this has anything to do with two screens running with different refresh rates or my gpu drivers, or just with the steam overlay. I updated them to the most recent ones ( AMD Crimson 16.9.2) but no luck.

That's my exact problem. Only seems to be happening since I updated the new Windows 10 anniversary update. Didn't happen once prior to this update.

Sorry, it took me so long, I did some more searching and found this thread

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-desktop/black-screen-after-exiting-a-game-windows-10-pro/dc69b7d7-d2d0-45fb-9556-40ca83e436e3?page=3&auth=1

Try to disable the display scaling in the properties for DarkSoulsIII.exe first. If the problem still remains also try running the exe as admin. I hope this might help, please let me know how it turned out

Disable display scaling was already checked. I have set to run as Admin permanatly and not had the issue so far today. See if that does it.

Thank you!

Hello,

Not sure if this is a solution. But apparently with all suggested workarounds throughout google nothing really works, at least for me, or maybe some folks ain't doing their job well.

But here's something to try if you're still experiencing blackout on exit even with the latest 1.08 update, and assuming you're using a 144hz and G-Sync monitor like I do (PG278Q)

Set your desktop to 120hz refresh rate, and run the games on full screen, that would tend to change the refresh rate to 144hz for most games. You can double check that if you have an info button on your monitor, changes when some process runs in full screen to 144.

That solved my issue thus far, apparently the game is either causing a crash in graphics or something isn't right when you exit and the monitor tries to adjust to the 144hz to the desktop. While if the desktop was running on 120hz the exit process somewhat feels smoother.

Hope this helps!

This seems to only happen with G-Sync 144hz monitors. I found a reddit that suggested this and it worked for me. (after trying all the other stuff first)

Nvidia Control Panel -> 3D Settings -> Manage 3D Settings -> Add Game executable (select DS3)-> Scroll down to Preferred refresh rate -> Set to Application controlled. CLICK APPLY!!

This worked perfectly, thanks a ton!

Late to the party but found a way to keep G-Sync w/ 144hz enabled and didn't need to edit any settings in the Nvidia control panel. Quit the game to the main menu. Press Alt+Tab and the screen will go blank (don't panic), wait around for a few seconds, then Alt+Tab again. You'll be back at the DS3 main menu. NOW exit the game as normal and you'll be back into your desktop just fine.
