There seems to be a common misconception with counter attacks. let me explain.
the leo ring increases thrust weapon counter attack damage by 25% (as of a couple of patches ago, it used to be 15% but thrust weapon damage got reduced at the same time)
equip leo ring, use a spear and spam attacks, even WITHOUT the THUD noise, you will receive the counter damage as long as your opponents is in the middle of an action (such as attacking, rolling etc)
now, the THUD noise from a hit, such as when you 'kick' a player and they are in a vulnerable state, or on some bosses under certain conditions seems to raise ALL hits. I've had extra damage on fume swings, long sword hits etc that are not thrust damage.
go check out nothmls latest video (common misconceptions) for the evidence to support what I'm saying.
basically.
attack during any animation with thrust damage = counter
attack in 'vulnerable' state = any damage type boosted
So I get a counter for clipping ppl durring rolls as well? Hmm, I might give the leo ring a shot then.
you get it when they perform most actions. but the 'thud' isn't just counter attack, that's your opponent in a 'vulnerable ' state.
thrust weapon counter damage works without the THUD noise.
