The Pillars of Lothric
Throughout the game you might have run into a few rings that mention the circles of power in Lothric. The kingdom is said to have been built on three founding princples, or "pillars" - the Priestess, the Knight, and the Scholar.

Demon Souls is the story of the Priestess. The world is a warzone with the followers of gods fighting demons, and plenty of acolytes and saints roaming about illustrate this. But the most notable is the Maiden Astraea - named after the Greek goddess of purity - who attempted to bring peace by taking a Soul of Demon.

Dark Souls is the story of the Knight, Oscar of Astora, and his mission to ring the Bells of Awakening to link the dying flame. He fails this task and hands it off to the player, but was intended to play a greater role in the story - pursuing his task alongside the player and ultimately opposing them.

Dark Souls 2 is the story of the Scholar. Aldia learnt of the futility in constantly re-linking the flame and suffering Undead curses, and was the first character in the series to consider a third option - breaking the cycle. He attempted to make life that did not require the Flame, but like Oscar, he fails and instead guides the player to understand the consequences of linking (or not linking) the fire.

Bloodborne is the story of the Hunter - a fourth "unofficial" pillar that, despite its side-status, was nonetheless important in building Lothric (DS3).

This... this actually makes sense!

More extrapolation: while I don't know how good miracles were in Demon's Souls, but:
Dark Souls I is known for the poise (that some DSIII players are still unable to let go of) and all the talk of how it made heavy weapons - STR weapons - strong.
Dark Souls II had a shitton of magic/dark/hybrid builds, which all rely quite heavily on INT, and the infamous CMW Ice Rapier among other things.
Bloodborne had some heavy weapons and strength scaling, but the fast-paced gameplay, absence of poise and dedicated heavy armor led to Skill builds being quite popular and fitting for the style of the game - and Skill is basically BB's DEX.

Do you think this represents the series swan song? Like effectively saying "all of this was possible because of DeS, DS1, 2 and BB".

That's pretty much what I was thinking.

It could, of course, all be coincidence, or more even simply a reference to the Warrior/Priest/Mage/Rogue archetypes that founded the RPG genre. But I find that tetrad is more associated with D&D, Gauntlet, and Final Fantasy 1-3. The choice of names, specifically "Scholar" instead of Mage or some synonym, makes it seem like a direct reference to the prior games.
