What this guy said.
In fact, I find that ranged builds make everything in the game trivially easy except for boss fights. And even then a patient bow user with good spatial awareness can easily dispatch aggressive bosses.
The better question would be this: Can crossbow/bow users inflict compareable damage to that of melee and magic users? My completely anecdotal and unscientific answer is yes...sorta.
With 50 dex and a Black Bow of Pharis, I was doing roughly half the damage per strike as my Chaos Blade. So two arrow strikes was equivalent to one melee strike. Not a bad tradeoff if you know how to position yourself. And spamming arrows becomes easier once you're able to purchase dark arrows with innate tracking.
TL;DR Yes, bows are very viable and very effective in PVE. Don't know about crossbows though.
onikiri lol that's why !
Not to be salty or anything but I get tired of seeing the damn thing.
this, I just get BORED OF seeing 8/10 people using them.
Because they only became popular when onislayer got buffed. I USED TO use them back at start of the game, when they were an average weapon.
then onislayer got buffed, now all I see are people spamming the weapon art hoping for a 1shot combo.
