It turns out the button i thought was the parry button is actually the button for the special moves.

Use a parry item

caetus, parry dagger, or a weapon than can parry.

You are pressing the right button but using the wrong weapon/shield.

If you have a weapon in your right hand, and nothing in the left, you'll do the weapon's special.

You need a shield that can parry. Only shields that have a little circle icon in their corner can parry. Those that have a sword in a diamond icon will perform your other weapon's weapon art instead.

The fact that some shields let you use weapon arts and some are for parrying?

Umm... yeah... I find choices annoying too...

More understandably, its anoyying that you can't parry with a shield that has a specific style, instead of being able to parry with any shield. Its more than a "choice" as your shield type can adapt your playstyle, undoubtebly.

or as an alternative they could have separate buttons for parrying and weapon arts.

Well the thing is I dont really care about weapon arts, and i'd rather just be able to parry with any shield.

I know, right? Also the fact that you can't bind particular items/spells/weapons to a key and have to scroll through them in a single direction. And that roll and sprint use the same button. And low res textures. And you can't strafe. And you can't aim with your camera on x axis. And YOU CAN'T TYPE IN ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ AMOUNT OF ITEMS YOU WANT TO BUY AND NEED TO SCROLLOLOLOLOL.

Then pick a shield with the parry ability.

What's the problem?

because the ones that can parry either dont have 100% physical damage block or are later into the game. I can probably get the black knight shield in anor londo (took me 2 damn hours to farm it in dark souls 1), but im still not there yet. im just saying its annoying you have to choose between 100% physical damage block or parrying until much later into the game, while that just wasnt the case in dark souls 1 and 2.
