if i kill judicator argo will i no longer be able to be with the church of the spear and play as the boss for other hosts?

Not that I know of, but you can bring him back to life at the purging monument if it does.

ok cool wanted to make sure that progressing in the dlc made the covenant unusable

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have to be alive if you wish to be summoned as the boss. Either way, like Spooky Nova said, you can just revive him at any time. It costs a good amount of souls that scales with what level you are.

Googleing it said it just required the covenant item to be equiped so you are probably good.

That's not even required. If you have an auto-summon item on, used a red eye orb or have your sign down in the Ringed City, then there's a chance you'll be summoned as the boss. Having the covenant item equipped will give you a better chance of being summoned, but you don't even need to join the covenant to be the boss.
