I think one maggot spawns next to bonfire which probably is blocking usage of bonfire.

Kill it to receive few items and gain access to bonfire again.

I mean kinda the reincarnation, really when you reallocate your stats you have a chance of being reborn as a grub. Heysel did it one too many times.
