I think I finally figured out why I don't like DS3 as much as DS2
Simply enough, it's cause there's no lifegems. So often I burn though all my estus halfway through and don't think to head back since I have no healing. Well that and health going up with each level so I can feel I'm getting a bit stronger each level but it's mostly the lack of healing options.

Life gems make DS2 such a cheese. Combat, when it is isn't being a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ambush or the AI actually works, can be so easily cheesed thanks to life gems. They're not even hard to get, either. That combined with ADP makes the game stupidly simple.

In DS1 you have your estus, and that's about I think. You can't even move while healing, making healing a very important decision requiring timing. In DS3, you can move while healing which doesn't really help avoid an attack if you poorly time a heal, but it keeps things moving which fits with the faster pace. You also have Siegbrau and divine blessings, some miracles if you are running a faith build, as well as some rings and blessed items that will regenerate health over time. Life gems really just feel unnecessary and make combat way too easy imo.

As far as hp going up each level goes, I feel like it kinda defeats the point of having vigor as a choice to level up to begin with. But adp makes health redundant anyway so...

Or you're just bad at this game? Maybe learn not to get hit, and roll properly? This game is already on easy mode. It's more like the lack of experience.

i agree with dust here. lifegems are far too easy to farm, thus making it far to easy to just facetank and heal through most fights of ds2. i did a playthrough of ds2 a few weeks ago and i stopped using lifegems when i had 5 estus because of it felt cheap to use them.
the health going up with each level thing always confused me and just made me not level vigor for simple offline (no pvp at all) playthroughs.

ADP is just a bad idea. i mean ds1 had a stupid stat aswell (resistance), but that ♥♥♥♥ was just useless and could be ignored. ADP on the other hand... it's just so important to get it to a certain level so you can have with the combat....bad idea

Oh yes the thing that make ds2 only "hard" when they put 6 enemies that can 2 shot you in the same room.
It leady to ds2 being both super easy and super unfair.
Maybe one of the reasons why the game didn't click with most pepole.

I don't know who's idea it was to have a stat that allows you to give yourself so many iframes, you can roll long before an attack even hits and still not get hit, but it really ruins combat. And because health increases with level ups, you literally have no reason to level up vigor, at least not for a while.

I do want to say to OP though - if you do enjoy DS2 that's fine, I get that plenty of people enjoy it. I just really don't like the game myself and I don't want DS3 to take inspiration from it.

The Fume Ultra Greatsword is pretty neat though.

Some of us agree with op, and they have the right to express their opinion on the game.

I know you've already encountered a lot of anti-lifegem people but I loved having them in Dark Souls 2. It does feel a bit cheap that especially early on in Dark Souls 3 you could clear a level and have almost no estus left towards the end of it. And stuff that heals you over time, like a blessed weapon or a blessed shield takes way too long to actually be useful. I don't care about if something like a healing item is considered "casual". Lifegems made sure had a way to get through a level without running out of heals halfway through. It's not fun to run out of heals halfway through a level. And any sort of caster build has it even harder since they have to sacrifice some estus flasks for ashen estus flasks. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 2 did it right with having consumables that restored health and spell casts. And yeah, Demon's Souls was the first Souls game to have basically infinite healing consumables and spell restoring consumables. So you don't get to blame Dark Souls 2 for that. And I know that Demon's Souls ONLY had consumables for restoring your health, but if you were reckless with using them you had to farm them. So there was that to think about.

i can actually understand, why some people prefer d2 over the others, since it does some things better/different than ds1/ds3. i really love the idea of powerstancing for example and would love to see that again in later fromsoft games, but more polished and balanced. i also like ds2's funny gimmick weapons which can snipe people over ridicolous distances

i don't even want to bash ds2, since i can see why some people prefer it and the estus vs lifegem thing is just a matter of taste.
i also know how healing items work in demon's souls (same for bloodborne btw) since i played it. i always saw estus as an improvement, but again, thats my opinion, not fact. i actually prefer ds2 over demon's souls

ah yes because having infinite healing makes a souls game "more enjoyable"

So to explain a bit more for those disagreeing with me. All of this is just personal opinion. I still like DS3 and the balance between regular Estus and Ashen Estus is a rather interesting and engaging mechanic for someone who usually goes for a magic knight build. Ultimately though I've just had a lot of bad scraps from either invaders or enemies I struggle beating and running back to the bonfire right at the boss door cause I'm empty on healing just isn't fun to me. I am also biased because DS2 is the first and souls game I've beaten fully so you can take my words with a grain of salt if you want.

lifegems heal so slow though here, also ds3's bonfire to bonfire is not as long as ds2 imo
Ray May 11, 2021 @ 7:14am
bonfires are all over the place in DS3
AlienGodHunter May 11, 2021 @ 9:09am
Are you burning undead bone shards? I didn't know what to do with those until like 40 hours into the game, and since then my estus refills have been sufficient to keep me rolling to the next bonfinre.
