Purple Phantoms

Could someone please explain to me what exactly purple phantoms are and their purpose? I tried putting down summon signs but they just kill me. I didn't think they'd be able to attack me. I thought I was just going to help with fights. I don't understand what being a purple phantom means.

I presume you equipped the Mound-makers covenant badge and used the White Sign Soapstone to place a purple sign. As a purple phantom, you can hit the host, other phantoms, and the PvE. People who summon a purple phantom usually expect PvP, but some newer players might not be aware of how Mound-makers works. For PvP, place a purple sign or a red sign. For jolly co-operation, place a white or gold sign. Equip the Warrior of Sunlight badge and use your White Sign Soapstone.

mad phantoms, they have been hollow too long and lost their minds. they are able to attack you because of that so it's a risk to summon them.

Aaahh. I see. I guess there's more to it than just liking the color purple. I've never understood these covenant things.

They are mad spirits, they've been hollow for so long that they just became completely mad. They can attack anyone and everyone, friend or foe, doesn't matter. They might help you, they might attack you, it's up to you if you want to risk summoning them. I used to be one myself lol, but mostly for PvP.
