Snake-tail statue in Friede's boss chamber depicts who?
You can see it behind the bonfire after defeating the boss, at the end of the room opposite to the entrance. I see messages generally talking of sadness but I've been playing Souls games for years and nothing comes to mind other than Aldrich or Priscilla from DkS1 (but that makes less sense)

To me- it's an effigy of Priscilla, who Freide copied the likeness of due to the painted world's residents revering Priscilla and thus used that knowledge to try and trick them into siding with her on the idea of suppressing the flame.

Most importantly, Father Ariandel. I like to think in his madness he believes Freide to be the "restored" Priscilla, as he is the "restorer of the Painted World," and I felt like that was more apparent than ever when he saw her die- he quivered in blind fury at the sight of the Painted World's most beloved being killed before his eyes and completely lost it. They're not related- Freide is Yuria's sister, she came to the Painted World yet Ariandel would go practically insane with rage at her death? Nah- I believe he honestly thinks her to be "Priscilla" despite not remembering "Priscilla" as the name of the being they love- be it due to time, or restoration and re-restoration of the painted worlds.

"After renouncing everything, Friede discovered a people that she wished to protect, and assumed the precise form that they yearned for." - Ordained Set

What an awesome answer, thank you. This sheds so much light on the questions I had. But why did Freide wanted to suppress the flame? To "rule" in anyone else's stead? Would the awakening of the flame cause the painted world to be destroyed even though the painting girl in the attic claims she needs fire to complete her painting? That's the only thing left unclear to me.

That and the description of Ariandel's flail, "Rose of Ariandel," where it says, "Ariandel, being the restorer of the Painted World, knew that it was painted with blood, and only blood could protect the secret." What secret would Ariandel be trying to conceal if he was being tricked by Freide all along? What's there left for him to scheme about?

Whoops- it's not the Chillbite Ring's description that says that, but the Ordained Set- Freide's armor. Sorry! Will edit original post-

But anyways, like it says she found a people that she wished to protect- the denizens of the Painted World. She must have come to love them in some way and doesn't want the world to be burned away, despite many of the denizens themselves desire it. The 2 crow weapons state "In their infatuation with Sister Friede, the Corvian Knights swore to protect the painting from fire, and to this end, took to the execution of their own brethren."

There's nothing to my knowledge referencing the secret beyond that so it's really just speculation at this point. Assuming that the second DLC picks up where this one leaves off with Gael in search of a "dark soul" pigment for the painting, perhaps we'll learn more.

So instead, I'll tell you my totally unsubstantial and completely stupid idea as to what it is- The "secret" is that the Painted World is the cross-over point between Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and that the painter is the decendent of Priscilla- who is actually the ancestor of the Pthumerian people, whos BLOOD, when imbibed by humans, triggered a mutation that turned people into beasts due to cross-breeding between the gods and dragons- while the Old Ones and cosmic entities are behind the initial creation of fire and souls that gave rise to the beings in the Dark Souls universe.

...... So basically yeah, I have no idea. There's nothing to really point to anything about the secret being referenced and I don't think we'll ever know unless DLC2 is related. xD

Let me tell you that your imagination is impressive. You actually managed to link Dark Souls with Bloodborne using a plot hole in the Dark Souls story. I am honestly impressed, no irony, and I would really like to read some stories written by fans about this point.

Ahaha. Thanks. I don't actually know of anyone else who's thought of this, I'm sure there are, but that was pretty much impromptu ridiculousness on my part.

I, TOO, would love to see some kind of fully fleshed out theory like that. I love Bloodborne so anything relating to it has my immediate approval. Heh.

i love when the community makes theories that are actually plausible. having a productive fanbase is beneficial for the developer and the players who like the product. :)

Or if anyone can post a screenshot XD I am interested to look, I never took a full look around the arena when I beat them. Don't fancy beating the bosses quite yet, having fun luring invaders in a shredding them with my scythe or making them fall with Wolnir Bridge 2.0

Oh yeah. Even if it's not likely, by a long stretch, it's still really cool to see how something like Dark Souls writing can facilitate such things by providing enough and simultaneously not enough story.

For example many people will tell you that they believe Manus to be the Furtive Pygmy but I believe that Manus is instead an Oolacile sorcerer pursuaded by Kaathe to use the "art of Lifedrain" upon the corpse of the Furtive Pygmy- Thus why the humanity overtakes him and he goes mad with feelings of love and hate, searching for the broken amulet and kidnapping Dusk- who I theorize to be the Manus' love interest and the one who gave him the amulet to begin with.

There's so many possible ways you can go with stuff in these games. It's so cool.

maybe leaving plot holes is not that bad after all :)

Here ya go. You can tell it's not a corpse, but some kind of effigy made to emulate, what I feel, is Priscilla.

What an awesome answer, thank you. This sheds so much light on the questions I had. But why did Freide wanted to suppress the flame? To "rule" in anyone else's stead? The secret can be many things.

1) The painting must burn down so a new one can be made. I don't think this is it, because even corvians know this.
2) As the painting lady says, Gael must find the dark soul of a man so the girl can paint. Maybe there lies some darker truth.
3) Something completely unrelated thing about his past or something.
4) The secret is the painting itself, and this is a metaphor. An original Japanese text could confirm or the opposite. English version has some.. well, ill-translated things. Not many tho.

Good point on that last one. I often forget that sometimes poor translation obscures things more than they should. I'd like to see some more interpretations of the actual japanese text.
