Are pure dex builds good?
Hey I was thinking. Strength is cool in the fact that it gives your character more defense, which is overall pretty cool not only in terms of trading hits but in terms of pretty much everything.
On the other hand dex here seems to be only giving dex damage, casting speed and falling damage.
And now my question is, with strength you can stack up on defense and be a literal tank, but with dex stacking up defense through vitality still leaves you behind actual strength or str/dex characters.

Now, my whole knowledge is theoretical, and the reason why I'm posting this here is to have an actual dex player tell me that my thesis is stupid. So here are the questions I'd like to ask:
  • Is lower defense really putting dex builds at a disadvantage?
  • Why would you go full dex, when you can half invest your points into other stats and become a mage, cleric or a pyromancer?
  • If dex builds are valid, where do you invest your points, before reaching 120, after you had maxed your dex, vigor, endurance?

I would really appreciate other people replying respectively to the said points, on the other hand I said "make me look dumb", so feel free to do that as well.

  • no, because dex has fast weapons. While str is about trading, dex is about evading and finding openings. In pvp alot of fast weapons can hit an opponent who start swinging a slow weapon and still dodge before the hit connects.

  • full dex makes sense for weapons with high dex scaling. There is a point where dex starts to get good AR returns per level again at a really high dex level. Like around 60-80 or something. When you have a pure dex build you can always buff your weapon with resins and bundles aswell.

Why would you go full dex? Well if you want to mainly melee than you only have the option between pure dex or hybrid buff build like dex+faith or dex/int. The thing about hybrid buff build is that they invest stats in int or faith just for that buff. If that buff runs out these stats are essentially wasted points. So If you dont want to rely on that buff a pure dex build might be better. If you want to be a caster aswell you have to consider you need to lvl attunement for slots and need to sacrifice like 2 ring slots to make your spell/pyros/miracles damage actually worth it. So you go pure dex if you dont want to rely on buffs and want to mainly melee and not cast.

  • well thats up to you isnt it? There is no one way of doing things in dark souls. If you want to have a large weaponpool always at your disposal lvling vitality might be an idea. Depending on your choice of weapon leveling str a little bit can also proof to be beneficial for the AR. Also stats requirements for your weapons need to be considered. You might also get enough int/faith for spells/miracles that dont improve with higher spellbuffs. Like for example tears of denial, blessed weapon, or force (for invasions) are nice to have and doesnt need much investment.

dex > str in pvp
