They are amazing at PvE though and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ do i love myself large beaitiful swords.
Love this response. Ultra may not be the best for PVP, but they're hardly useless, especially if, like me, you're Sunlight, and the host actually knows how to back you up when they summon you. Nothing like swatting the greedy invader with their eye on the Host with a three-hit Greatsword combo. I've gotten more than one invader kill with a UGS, and I've been playing online for literally one day. Plus, if you're running strength and you do find yourself in a one-on-one situation where you're not comfortable using the UGS, you can always switch to a Heavy Broadsword, Mace, etc.
And yeah, it's quite fun for PVE too. Nothing like 1-2 shotting or stun-locking enemies who would otherwise be extremely threatening. Also was nice for stomping the Abyss Watchers.
Dex is usually associated with sweaty PvP tryhards: quick, hard-to-react weapons that hit for way more damage than they should and then on top of that they go for some galaxy brains tactics like backstabbing or parrying you with +10 sharp dagger with hornet ring equiped.
Strength users are usually associated with wholesome-like simplemindness and stubborness. They don't need fancy tactics - they have a large sword that hits exactly as hard as it looks and they have poise to tank through attacks that try to stop them. In PvE they also often experience the joys of being able to stagger enemies more often, if not stunlocking them entirely.
For these reasons ultra heavy lads are more often found in PvE situations as helpful summons. They almost never invade because why would they.
I think there's a little more nuance to it than, "Dex for PVP, Strength for PVE." There are a couple bosses like the Crystal Sage and the Dancer that I found much more manageable with a Dex build than a Strength build. Sometimes that wacky scimitar speed really makes the difference (though on the flipside, Strength with a Mace utterly trivializes all of Catacombs of Carthus).
Dex is better if you want to dodge, Strength is better if you don't want to get punished quite as hard for attacking when you should have dodged (since, with Poise, you still get your hit in). Both of these are totally viable in PVE.
Hell yeah, I recently finished a DEX run and I really sweated it out a lot, since I almost could not receive more than 2 hits before dying 😂 now I'm in NG+ with a total different build and in about 7 hours I've already reached Irithyll, also helping some people. It's a total different setup. Also now I try some PvP, in the first run I always avoided it by not being an ember (I don't know the exact English term since I'm since I'm playing in Italian) because otherwise I will just die every time...
Only being able to tank 2 hits before dying doesnt really have anything to do with being a str or dex build. It means you forgot to level vigor.
Also if you use dex you need to Git Gud :P
Rapiers. And I mean any that isn't estoc and doesn't enjoy having a range of a spear.
Low range? Check.
No crowd control? Check.
Bounces off shields? Check.
Replaces kick with pointless backstep slash that deals no damage, has no hyperarmor and can be parried? Check.
Reliably low AR of, at best, 380 at 40 sharp DEX, when any top tier light weapon should be dealing 400, at least? Check.
I'm the man who beat the entire game with Ricard's rapier. It sucked a lot of A.
Even then there are weapons that will respond far better to this. Sharp lothric sword has like 410 damage at same 40 DEX while avoiding any other issues listed above. A perfect weapon, as far as Im concerned.
Also what was that about better backstab fishing? Aren't literally all weapons use exactly the same backstab triggers?
Rapiers definitely have their advantages--first time I picked one up I utterly annihilated the Pontiff, who I previously considered one of the hardest bosses in the game, and who utterly walled my first attempt to clear the game. Admittedly that had a lot to do with the Pontiff's crippling weakness to Thrust damage, but that wacky attack speed certainly doesn't hurt. I do prefer the scimitar a bit, mostly due to its big horizontal hitbox, but I don't consider the Rapier terrible. I wouldn't run the game just using Rapier, but then I never stick to a single weapon. At minimum, I like having one quick weapon and one big weapon with more reach. In my last strength run, I had a Greatsword and a Broadsword as my primary weapons, but I also kept a Mace in my pocket to dunk on knights and skeletons.
EDIT: I do want to take a moment to applaud you for running the game pure Rapier though. I'm glad you enjoyed the weapon enough to impose that kind of challenge on yourself.
