The throw itself is also fast enough to punish estus, assuming you notice the bottle swig and throw right away.
Due to the curved throw, you can essentially skip terrain if you aim it well enough, and at a certain point of height X distance, the drop will go straight down. Some mastery required but guaranteed headshots if you can aim it well enough.

I love it to punish running invaders or people chugin estus. Sure there are other more viable items or weapons for that.. but overall it's unique and not useless.
I'm not telling you to stop using the javelin though, just curious about what's the appeal.
