How rare is the refined gem drop, and a related question..
So, as I stated elsewhere on these boards.... returning to DS3 after loving DS but finding soemthing missing in DS2. Loving it so far. I ended up settling on a 40//40 build in DS, using Claymore or Longsword depending on the situation.

It looks like I'm probably going to end up doing the same in DS3. I had a refined gem drop from the blue Lothric knight in the High Wall area, and I have a claymore and of course a few longswords. I'm wondering if I'm going to have to choose which one to take along the refined path, or if there's a decent chance to get another refined gem so that I can do both (I have no problems farming for all the titanite needed).

A related question, is there another Quality blade I should look out for/try out before deciding?

Thanks for any advice.

You'll mostly get refined gems within Lothric castle, farmable from the knights around the Dragon Barracks. They can be farmed from the blue caped knight that is by Emma, they drop gems time to time.

Okay, good to know it's not once per playthorugh, thanks.

Not sure how early you are trying to get one, but there is a titanite lizard that drops a refined gem in the Grand Archives.

That's just it, was hoping to use it on one blade as soon as my stats started making the scaling worth it, but hoping I wouldn't be stuck with it if I decided I wanted to go with the other blade often as well. If I'm not stuck with just one, I'll use the one I found relatively early, since I'm not stuck with that decision. Very good to know.

On a side note, man my mechanics have gotten rusty. In DS, once I decided on a build after my first playthrough, started another and ended up pumping everything into str and dex early because I didn't need to up HP as much. Not so this time... So for awhile anyway I just turned a longsword raw, sincce it will be a bit before I start getting my str and dex up :P I get hit way too much now.

The red eyed, blue Lothric Knight is a guaranteed Refined drop the first time.

The Black Knight Poisesword is still one of the premier Quality weapons and it doesn't even need infusion. Lothric Knight Sword is the best Straight Sword for any/all forms of scaling. Astora GS has exceptional scaling with every infusion (although best with Sharp.)

Just looked up the lothric knight sword... I loved my leo ring in DS. Longer thrusting attack, sounds like I’ll have to test it out

Its R2s are thrusts, which is great for numerous reasons, but the Leo Ring is too contextually specific to base any build around. The Lothric Knight Sword also has a higher Critical modifier than any weapon outside of the Dagger class, so you might as well change that Leo Ring to the Hornet Ring.
