How do you parry Pontiff?

I've parried Pontiff often with the Black Blade whenever he dashes to my side, since he always uses the same slash with his Profaned Blade, and the telegraph is reasonable for player reflexes. I found this the most reliable attack to parry the Pontiff, and he uses it a fair bit-- that is, until he summons his shade.

Always parry the overhead attacks, The crossed swords seem to be the easiest for me. Also, I found that with the small round shields, parrying is the same as in ds1. Just hit the parry button right when the weapon starts coming at you (watch his wrist or the hilt of the sword).

Still on SL 1 playthrough? I can't help with parry his other attacks, could never manage it.
But on my SL 1 journey it helped me to do the Irithyll Dungeon first and buy some lightning resins.

Oh and by small round shield I mean shields like the caudacious round shield. I think those ones are actually medium and not small :L
