Game Launches to frozen "press any button" screen

Hello! I have been browsing the internet for 3 days now trying to find a solution to this problem, alas i've come up empty and am looking for help. I have attempted every suggestion that has come from any of the previous threads discussing this issue, if not something similar, to no avail.

The title screen of the game loads in after waiting about 5-10 minutes, then music and what not plays. As soon as i press any button (controller or mouse/keyboard) it locks up.


At the point i've done the following;
- Verified integrity of files through steam
- reinstalled game twice
- restarted steam/PC 3 times
- unplugged and replugged keyboard, mouse, and controller
- as stated above, followed previous threads (the dll files for errors, looking for the x86 file using the depends software, as well as fiddle with the settings to make sure i am launching with reduced graphics and windowed mode)

One thing i did notice, and this happens consistently;
In task manager the CPU runs at 0 - 0.3%, fluctuating in that range.
It's also not a total freeze as the music continues uninterrupted.
The part that makes me say it's frozen is the highlighting that normally flashes behind the words "Press any button" stops flashing when i click on the screen.

Using
an AMD Ryzen 5 2400G
an AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
16GB of DDR4
1TB w/ 282GB free
and Windows 10

No other game has had this issue, in fact i have previously(months ago) launched ds3 without any issues at all. I suddenly got the urge to play and this happens haha.

Do you have sysinternals Process Explorer?

It would be useful to see how 'lean' the windows install is. If you download, run it as admin, then File.Save as... you will have a text file showing processes and apps running. Post the contents here if you want me to take a look.

the update to the amd software was done this morning as a troubleshooting step to make sure everything was up to date

Ok. This all relates to troubleshooting:


Firstly, try disconnecting any hardware devices you aren't using while playing. This includes printers, scanners, cameras, controllers, hubs, firewire / usb devices. Sometimes these can interfere with the normal functioning of a single game even if most others work fine. I know this from experience.


Secondly, the reason I asked you to post that list of apps is that the more stuff you have running in the background and the more devices connected to your PC, the more chance there is of something conflicting with your games. It seems odd that your Dark Souls 3 takes 5 - 10 minutes to load.

My Process Explorer list is only about 40 lines long. Yours is comparatively HUGE. What I'd suggest you do is -> go through that list and identify any programs you don't need running while playing Dark Souls 3.

Once you have done this, create a batch file (text file with .bat extension) on your desktop as so:

taskkill /f /im sqlwriter.exe
taskkill /f /im wlidsvc.exe
taskkill /f /im wlidsvcm.exe

Add all the things you want to temporarily shutdown to that list of executables. I can't tell you what you do and don't need, but...

Spotify, Discord, Firefox, Xbox / XBoxAppServices / GameBar, THXHelper / Service, Realtek, jusched, all AMD / Radeon tools, Adobe, GoogleUpdate & Crash reporting, ctfmon - all seem like things you could potentially unload while troubleshooting. I have an AMD graphics card and Realtek sound - those .exe files are not needed for my games to work. Just the drivers.

What are GamingServices? CefSharp? Corsair? HxOutlook?

After creating and saving the batch file, run it by double-clicking its icon on your desktop.

Try to get your Process Explorer list down as much as possible without removing something you need (you'll soon tell if something doesn't work after unloading the .exe). You can also force apps to close by right-clicking them in Process Explorer, choose Kill Process. Don't mess with anything marked 'Windows' or 'Microsoft' at this stage.


There are also likely many Windows Services you can disable, some of which can also interfere with your games. That is another procedure to go through... we can do that too.


It would also be ideal to disable any devices on your motherboard (through BIOS) that you are not using. Like integrated graphics, network etc.. even if they are already disabled by the OS.


Anti-malware / virus programs can also interfere. You might try disabling those temporarily, to see if they are clashing with DS3.


See how you go with these things for starters. Post another Process Explorer list after running your batch file and unloading stuff so we can compare before and after. See if there is any difference in game load time and stability.

This is what i have after killing everything that didn't seem required while running DS3.
Any process that are still here that you may have mentioned to kill did 1 of 2 things;
1 they just restarted themselves every time i right clicked> kill process. Or 2 "Error opening process: Access is denied." This is the message i get when i try to kill either of the "googlecrashhandlers"
Also, when i ran the batch file, it gave me errors for the first 2 lines you told me to write, and then finished the last line.

- do you also have an integrated gpu? if yes, make absolutely sure that the game runs with the AMD one.
- does your monitor have a refresh rate higher than 60Hz? if yes, set it to be 60Hz.

Update: I just tried launching it now and it didn't freeze up at all. I was able to actually go through the menu, and am now able to actually play....

I note that you said some apps wouldn't close down. They are possibly tied to Windows Services - so that is normal. These are the remaining ones to at least TRY to disable in your batch file (they may refuse to close as well):

If the game is now working, then something you unloaded (or if hardware, disconnected) must have been conflicting with it. So, maybe you just need to narrow things down in the list?

The razer ones are for my headset, and the corsair being my keyboard. Logmein is used for my minecraft server as well as my dnd group.
